just wanted to add that it is correct that some homes in levittown do have basements, but just a small section. But they are not "Levitt" homes; they're called the "Miller" capes.
How interesting? I never knew they were called Miller Capes. I wonder if I live in one? (I live in East Meadow.)
I'm not sure if East Meadow capes are considered "miller", I'm pretty sure it's just levittown areas. Way back when there were two common builders of Levittown. 'Levitt' and 'Miller'. The Miller ones have the basements. I know the section behind Kohls (on Hempstead tpke) in Levittown are all Millers. And I believe there's one other main section but I can't remember it right now.

The reason I was thinking that is because I have noticed that some homes, sprinkled throughout East Meadow (mostly near the Levittown border), look exactly like Levitt homes. And you can tell by looking at them that they have no basement.

There is also another type of cape where the kitchen is in the back of the house.
You walk into the living room. The stairs up are in front of you. You cant go to the left because there is a wall there.
The kitchen is behind the living room.
These capes are in the area across from Rite aid on hempstead tpke.

Re: Why are homes so cheap in Levittown??
The only thing that kept me from looking in LTown (as my DH calls it - he grew up there) is the fact that a basement was #1 on my list of must haves for a house. And if we did by there, I wanted McArthur HS ........so, no basements in the section of LTown that I like -

That's my house! Except my living room is to the left and the wall is on the right. I live off of East Meadow Avenue south of Prospect. Right behind the pool.

Nothing you don't know! I love it here. I grew up here. Went to Island Trees. My parents still live in that house. I had THE best childhood growing up! I mean THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!
When we were looking for houses this is the only place I really wanted to look. We bought in Levittown District. Our taxes are a little bit higher then Island trees. But the houses are more money in Island Trees
I LOVE LOVE LOVE my house and my neighborhood!
I think the fact that they don't have basements could be a big thing for some people. I didn't grow up with one so it never really bothered me. Also some houses in L-Town do have basements. They were built later and not by Levit himself.
As for storage we have eves upstairs for storage. We have crawlspaces on both sides of the house. My husband grew up with a basement and he was nervous about storage. We only filled up one side of the crawlspaces. The otherside of the house is completly empty,
Our house is expanded. We have dining room and a den (that we never use ) And we have a little extension off our laundry room that we use as a computer room.
I love my house and would love to stay here forever

Re: Why are homes so cheap in Levittown??
As most people said the taxes are high but I love the library and the pool so I make the most of my tax $s lol but yes no basement. I have a gigantic shed for christmas stuff, bikes, tools etc. I have big walk in closets in 2 bedrooms and also a storage eave that goes the length of the house so I have no problem with storage.
I have an expanded cape 4 beds, 2 bath, and formal dr. I love my house and my neighborhood. I am surrounded by neighbors that have lived there 30+ years so I have no problem with my neighborhood at all and its very friendly and quiet. Great place to raise kids and tons of young families around. Some houses are double dormered. These homes have a lot of potential and I see so many of them more modernized. I think the homes that are dirt cheap are the originals so if you look I would suggest finding something a little more updated if you can. HTH!

The area is good and family friendly. The homes are less expensive because they are small and built on slabs. They also have annoying things like washer/dryer and heating units in the main part of the house (many have these things in the kitchen). HTH!

Re: Why are homes so cheap in Levittown??
The houses in levittown have so much expandability.
Our house was a 4bedroom, 1 bathroom home with an extended kitchen and an attached 1.5 car garage.
We have a shed in the backyard for storage, and shelving along the walls in the garage.
We also blew out the wall between 2 closets to build a huge walk in one for storage.
After all the work we did on the inside of the house, we now have 3 bedrooms, and 1 bathroom. The downstairs master we made into a formal dining room with sliders out to the deck.
There are no original levitts on my block. Most of the houses have had some types of expansions done to them, whether it has been a rear or front dormer, double dormer, or being pushed out in the front or back.
The homes are inexpensive, the neighbors are truly one of a kind.
The schools are excellent, there are free pools to use during the summer, plenty of shopping alll over, and a really good star discount of $1396.

Yep, neither our washer/dryer or heating unit is in our kitchen. We even bought one that was converted to gas. If you drove down my block, you would see that no two homes look alike and half of them are huge!

Re: Why are homes so cheap in Levittown??
In my house the washing machine was in the kitchen and the dryer was in the garage. We built a closet in the wall of the kitchen into the garage and put a Whirlpool Duet washer and dryer in there. That made our kitchen feel a lot bigger.

Thats is kinda funny and sad to me at the same time. Whats not desirable about it? Test Scores? Kids? What is it.
By the looks of this thread I think most people would disagree.

The school district is excellent. Compare the grades from Levittown to other towns in the area and you will see how good the schools are. Also Levittown has an excellent Special ed department.
I love when people try to say things about Levittown.

Re: Why are homes so cheap in Levittown??
I teach in Island Trees and have been there for 12 years. I've had hundreds of students and know so many of the families in the area. It is a GREAT place to raise a family. I envy the sense of community that I even feel just working there. Our school district scores are right up there with Jericho, Manhasset, Great Neck, etc.
It's middle class, not fancy, no BS, and has lots of real, working-class people. You can't beat all the shopping nearby.
The big drawback imo is that it's not convenient for a regular commute into the city. You have to drive several miles in any direction to get to a LIRR station. Everything else everyone mentioned is true about the house layouts, storage, etc.
I often think about how nice it would be to live in such a warm community. But then the image of my students showing up at my house shatters that quickly.

Re: Why are homes so cheap in Levittown??
Hold on!! does anyone remember when you couldn't touch a house for less than $400K? for an original levitt?? I do! that's when i was trying to buy there but couldn't afford it!!
It's the nature of the market, that's all. If you buy there now, you will make a profit if you sell when the market improves again.

Not trying to offend anyone but this is what I heard from some realtors when we were looking. We looked in a few towns and one of them was Wantagh, and we noticed that their were some houses that were priced much less than others in Wantagh, yet they looked very similar, and almost every time it was a Wantagh address but the school zone was Levittown.
We also took what some of our friends that live or lived in the town of Levittown had to say, (we figured who better to ask) and what they said was that they like the lower home $ but were sending their kids to private school because the school district was not very good, and another friend moved before his kids reached school age. This was enough for us to stay away since we did not want to send our kids to private school.
