The school district is excellent. Compare the grades from Levittown to other towns in the area and you will see how good the schools are. Also Levittown has an excellent Special ed department.
I love when people try to say things about Levittown.
Yup Yup and what did I say last time...People heard it from someone who heard it from someone who never stepped foot in ltown
Not trying to offend anyone but this is what I heard from some realtors when we were looking. We looked in a few towns and one of them was Wantagh, and we noticed that their were some houses that were priced much less than others in Wantagh, yet they looked very similar, and almost every time it was a Wantagh address but the school zone was Levittown.
We also took what some of our friends that live or lived in the town of Levittown had to say, (we figured who better to ask) and what they said was that they like the lower home $ but were sending their kids to private school because the school district was not very good, and another friend moved before his kids reached school age. This was enough for us to stay away since we did not want to send our kids to private school.
Yes, and who wants to be in the Wantagh school district now with all its budget issues?
No offense taken, but I graduated from there and went on to be a college graduate... I am doing okay in life. OH! and about the realtor.... they are looking for biggest commission, if the prices are lower in a certain town, of course they will steer you toward a home that is in higher priced neighborhoods. Can't trust realtors. (sorry)

I think the issue is that every person has different standards when it comes to the schools. Some people only want a Jericho level or higher type school for their kids. It's all about prestige and what people think is the best. I, personally, am perfectly happy with the East Meadow schools, and I'm sure Levittown is just as good.

Never met anyone who lives around me in Levittown (Island Trees schools) who felt a need to send their kids to private school. My kids will attend Island Trees public schools (when I have kids :0) ). My DH went to Island Trees, went to college, and does very well for himself. As do all of his friends.

Re: Why are homes so cheap in Levittown??
When we bought in Levittown, I was calling for estimates on something and the woman I spoke to asked me where we moved from, and I said N Bellmore. She immediately said why would you move to Levittown, from Bellmore. Bellmore is a better town. I was completely caught off guard. Needless to say we didnt use her company. My friend had the same experience who also lives in levittown and moved from Bellmore. He called Empire carpet and a woman that worked there asked why he moved to Levittown.

Homes in the Wantagh school district do cost more. That is just a fact. It was when we were looking in 2003, and it still is now. The Wantagh schools are considered to be among the best on the south shore.
I do believe that Levittown has a bad rap because of Division. MacArthur may be fine, but Division doesn't seem to be a great school.

According to Newsweek's list, both Division and MacArthur make the grade. Wantagh isn't on the list. (I know many of you expressed a dislike for the list, so please take it with a grain of salt. Hey, I chose E. Meadow for my kids-to-be and it's not even on the list. So, I'm unbiased. )

I live in division zone. Some houses in WANTAGH go to Macarthur. I went to Island Trees no complaints. NO one around me sends their kids to private school. I pay to much in school taxes for that

We live in Wantagh but our SD is Levittown and I don't care how much our taxes are, DD is definitely going to private school. It's just a personal preference and we probably would do the same if we were zoned to the Wantagh SD.

Houses in Wantagh are more likely to have basements. Many of the houses in Wantagh/Levittown schools do not have basements as they are Levitts.
I know I'm a broken record on this issue but here are my two cents: 1) Levittown is great place to grow up. I had a wonderful childhood.
2) School districts are what you make of them. Parents need to make sure their kids are prepared for school, and parents need to provide educational opportunities for their kids. I had a great education, but it was also supplemented by my parents in many ways, and that was important. It's important to have a good school district, but IMO it's silly to split hairs. Most LI districts are good.

It is a personal prefernce, for sure. I just never understood the benefit to private school. How is it different? do you have more of a say about your childs education? (just looking for an explanation, i'm not being 'wise')

Re: Why are homes so cheap in Levittown??
How a nice, middle class town like Levittown can even get a 'bad' reputation is beyond me. I have a friend with two teenagers attending levittown schools & they are happy & getting a good education because their PARENTS are making sure of it. I truly love when people that don't have kids in school yet or have never lived, worked or even spent any significant time in a town have such strong negative opinions. I've posted this about ten million times but it can't be said enough, as the mother of a special Ed student not everyone is fortunate enough to produce MENSA children that would benefit from some of the programs a school like Jericho or Port Jefferson would have. Every kid has different needs and it is ALWAYS the parent's responsibility, never the school district's to ensure the child reaches their maximum potential. After having my child get to 4th grade barely able to write in a school that consistently receives NATIONAL attention as one of the best I can guarantee you the number of kids that get accepted to a 4 yr college & other stats like that don't really mean $hit. If I didn't contact the NY board of ed & force that district's hand they would have NEVER recognized my child's learning disability. I ultimately moved to an entirely different town so my child could get an education. Thank god I did. Every district on LI has problems for example while RE agents are steering people toward Wantagh are they saying that wantagh, bellmore & massapequa have a huge heroin problem in their high schools as announced by the Nassau county police earlier this year? People need to do their OWN research about towns and try to pick districts that are well rounded because as I said, you never know the special services your children may need. The district offices on LI are open, anyone can walk in ask for a copy of their budget & the programs they offer....I made the mistake of basing a school choice on hearsay/aka reputation all those years ago, it wasn't smart.

This is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read on this board It constantly blows my mind when these comments are made about different districts with NO reasoning behind it. If it is such a horrible district then there should be plenty of facts and statistics to back up your reasoning (to the above poster I don't mean to direct this at you...I'm referring to the comments that you heard)

Many of the houses in Wantagh that are zoned to Levittown are larger, include basements, and have larger properties, hence the price difference.
It's all about perception. The more that people spread rumors about Levittown not being a good place to live, the less people want to live there. That's why those of us who live here try to spread good news about it. Because once you live here, you see that it's not a bad place to live at all.
JMO, but I would not compare Jericho to Levittown. I know that this is not the absolute best school district on Long Island, however, not all of us can afford to live in a magnet district. Therefore, we need to find an affordable place to live in a good school district. That is Levittown.

Re: Why are homes so cheap in Levittown??
I love how people talk about a town they NEVER lived in or based on 1 friend's opinion. Or about what Levittown is about from after the war and the Levitt houses.
Well, things changed in 10, 20, 60 years.
We cannot take our grandma's opinion from 1960 on what Levittown is about.
Bottom line, Levittown is a great town with a good school district. Just look at the top school districts on LI. It's DEF. NOT on the bottom on the chart. Yes, it does not have the rep of Commack but the houses are about 1/2 the price and the taxes are not as high. But it's NOT the projects either!!!!!!!
Levittown is a great town for a starter house. Most of them don't have basements. This is mostly why they are cheaper. But they have been remodeled and expended. They have smaller rooms but they do appeal to a family who cannot afford a $500K house but does not want to compromise on schools and a safe and great town.
