I love how people talk about a town they NEVER lived in or based on 1 friend's opinion. Or about what Levittown is about from after the war and the Levitt houses.
Well, things changed in 10, 20, 60 years.
We cannot take our grandma's opinion from 1960 on what Levittown is about.
Bottom line, Levittown is a great town with a good school district. Just look at the top school districts on LI. It's DEF. NOT on the bottom on the chart. Yes, it does not have the rep of Commack but the houses are about 1/2 the price and the taxes are not as high. But it's NOT the projects either!!!!!!!
Levittown is a great town for a starter house. Most of them don't have basements. This is mostly why they are cheaper. But they have been remodeled and expended. They have smaller rooms but they do appeal to a family who cannot afford a $500K house but does not want to compromise on schools and a safe and great town.
It seems that this has touched a nerve with many who live in Levittown, and I am sorry if it offended anyone, but as I said before the information we received and the reason we decided that Levittown was not the town we wanted to buy a house in, was because of what friends who ACTUALLY LIVED THERE had to say about it. To me what is better than that? I would rather take the advice of someone experiencing it first hand then move in and find out for myself after it’s too late.
I’m sure that Levittown is a lovely place to raise a family, which my friends also said, but in their opinion (which I trust) it was not a good school district. That was enough for me to stay away because we did not want to send our kids to private school and we also did not want to buy and sell before they reached school age, we wanted to buy a house we could live in for the next 50 years. Also we feared about the resale value if for some unforeseeable reason we had to sell the house.
Again I’m sure it’s a great town to live in it just was not for us, to each his own.
The OP asked a question and I gave the reason why I think the houses are priced lower in Levittown.

I was not "targetting" you personally. But the topic has been brought up many times on Levittown.
Look a lot of people who live there love it. Why do you think they would tell everybody how good it is if it was not?
Yes, some people will not like it or the SD. But everybody does not like Jericho either or the neighborhood. KWIM?
I actually live in Hicksville on the border (1 block from the limit) of Levittown so they are my neighboors. I walk in their neighborhood all the time. Trust me I hear the same think in Hicksville. But if you look deeper lots of people who live in Levittown and Hicksville do not really move out.

How a nice, middle class town like Levittown can even get a 'bad' reputation is beyond me. I have a friend with two teenagers attending levittown schools & they are happy & getting a good education because their PARENTS are making sure of it. I truly love when people that don't have kids in school yet or have never lived, worked or even spent any significant time in a town have such strong negative opinions. I've posted this about ten million times but it can't be said enough, as the mother of a special Ed student not everyone is fortunate enough to produce MENSA children that would benefit from some of the programs a school like Jericho or Port Jefferson would have. Every kid has different needs and it is ALWAYS the parent's responsibility, never the school district's to ensure the child reaches their maximum potential. After having my child get to 4th grade barely able to write in a school that consistently receives NATIONAL attention as one of the best I can guarantee you the number of kids that get accepted to a 4 yr college & other stats like that don't really mean $hit. If I didn't contact the NY board of ed & force that district's hand they would have NEVER recognized my child's learning disability. I ultimately moved to an entirely different town so my child could get an education. Thank god I did. Every district on LI has problems for example while RE agents are steering people toward Wantagh are they saying that wantagh, bellmore & massapequa have a huge heroin problem in their high schools as announced by the Nassau county police earlier this year? People need to do their OWN research about towns and try to pick districts that are well rounded because as I said, you never know the special services your children may need. The district offices on LI are open, anyone can walk in ask for a copy of their budget & the programs they offer....I made the mistake of basing a school choice on hearsay/aka reputation all those years ago, it wasn't smart.
very well said!!
i am glad there are many others on here that defend their town as much as i do! it just makes me angry that people put it down when they know nothing about it!

I would say that taxes drive the prices down a bit...and the size (although most are expanded)
agreed, the taxes are very high for the size of the house & lot.

We live in Wantagh but our SD is Levittown and I don't care how much our taxes are, DD is definitely going to private school. It's just a personal preference and we probably would do the same if we were zoned to the Wantagh SD.
It is a personal prefernce, for sure. I just never understood the benefit to private school. How is it different? do you have more of a say about your childs education? (just looking for an explanation, i'm not being 'wise')
DH grew up in Levittown - So did my Mom
DH went to Chaminade, but my BIL and SIL and all of DH's friends went to Division. - It's not a "BAD" school., but I would personally (AS would DH who GREW UP THERE and LIVED there) choose McArthur over Division or Island Trees - Levittown is not the projects - it's a great town and DH had a great childhood and great friends. - I didn't want to buy there b/c I was adamant about a basement, DH didnt' want to buy there b/c he didn't want to live in Levittown -
And as far as private schools go, it's a personal choice - I don't think you can compare the experience and prestige of Chaminade to Division Ave HS. (Or Wantagh HS, or Massapequa HS or Plainedge HS .......)
Some private schools are what they are - they have a reputation and a prestige, and people want that for their children - there's nothing WRONG with that - DH said it was the absolute best thing he ever did as far as his education b/c it set him up for the rest of his life - Education, expectations, work ethic - Yes, you can learn those things from a public school, yes you SHOULD learn them from you parents - But the expereicne he had at Chaminade does not compare to the one his friends had at Division -
DH would want our future children to go to Chaminade (obviously if they're boys) - And if there were an equally prestigous private school for girls, we'd probably choose that as well - We're in the Massapequa SD
And I can completely understand people taking offense and getting defensive when someone says something negative about their town - HOWEVER, not everyone who chooses not to buy in Levittown is 'ignorant' and 'has never set foot in the town' or is 'taking advice from somone who told someone who told someone else' ........- Those who bought there LOVE it, as you SHOULD - you bought a home. Those who don't buy there DON'T love it, for whatever reasons they have - it doesn't make them wrong

I went to Island Trees. I can remember being in school and hearing stories of Macarthur and the "rich" kids and their nice cars and all the drugs they did And division was all a bunch of loser bad A$$ kids It was the kids saying it. We were rivals lol. I was in school and it was 10 plus years ago. LOL With that said the schools have changed A LOT. So what people heard or knew 10 years ago even 5 years ago is totally different then it is today. The lady across the street from me grew up in levittown went to division bought her house here in levittown and her kids go to division. I grew up in levittown bout my house here in levittown. One of my friends from high school grew up in levittown bought his house in levittown. It's a great place t live and people want to stay here!

I never said it was bad place to live - And yes, a lot of people stay there - The same way 1/3 of my HS (Plainedge) bought in Plainedge, and I'm sure Farmilgdale people bought in Farmingdale and so on - But for those of people who live there and get SO defensive about the town that they dispute ANYTHING anyone else says regardless of their experience with the town/schools etc - Like I said, anyone who lives there SHOULD love it and should think the schools are great etc etc. It's where they chose to make their home and raise their kids !! -
But ANYONE who has a differing OPINION of the town people jump on like their opinion is ill informed or whatever - If their friends live there now, their opinion isn't relevant, if someone grew up there, their opinion isn't relevant, regardless of the experience and relation if it's not a 100% POSITIVE experience with the town, those defending the the down knock it and say they don't know what they're talking about .......
It's just a difference of opinion. -

Very true! I grew up in Commack and would love to live there now, but there is no way I could afford the houses and for those who think Levittown's taxes are high, my parents pay at least twice my taxes to live in Commack.
I think we should all avoid blanket statements like this isn't a good school district about any town.
And for the private school argument, I work with several people who went to these great private schools and at the end of the day, we are all in the same place. So while I think it is your own choice whether you want your kid to go to private school, it's all about what you put into it.

Re: Why are homes so cheap in Levittown??
Just to give you an idea of where my post was coming from, let me say that I don't live in Levittown. I also don't have a problem with people not liking Levittown (although I personally think it is a great town and school district)...to each his own...absolutely.
I DO have a problem with people making blanket statements like "x district is a bad district" because that doesn't really tell you anything. Tell me WHY the district is bad. Because you don't like the way the district handled xyz issue or you don't think they focus enough on reading or their Special Ed. program is going down the tubes..whatever...just give me a reason to understand why you think it's "bad"..otherwise it's a waste of everyone's time
