Re: Why are sick kids out and about?

A child can have a cough or a runny nose for weeks and still feel good. If dd isn't sick in any other sense, I take her out with me. She would be miserable locked up in the house if she was feeling good and just had a runny nose.
I agree. My DD has had a runny nose on and off for a month now. It's viral and something has been going around- same with my DH and myself. To stay home just isn't realistic and it's not like a smaller child is going to get sick just b/c my daughter is in the same 30,000 square foot mall with them.
Unfortunately germs are everywhere. It's my opinion that kids have to be exposed to cold germs to build up immunity.
I agree with this completely!!! Just because a kid as a runny nose or coughs, doesn't mean they are sick.
Now, if he is really under the weather, has a fever, diareah, or is very lethargic, then I try to stay in so he can rest; I don't go to gym class; etc. But if he just has some clear snot running out of his nose and coughs every 1/2 hour to clear his throat...sorry...business as usual.

Posted by dm24angel Eevryone is taking offense weirdly to what Im saying.
Im not talking about going to get meds for a sick kid, when you dont have a sitter etc.
I really don't feel my answer to your question was defensive or weird. I was giving you an honest answer to your question of why you would see a sick child in Target (being one of the places you mentioned) Was not that part of your question? Or maybe you were just venting and making a statement not a question.

I always guage Alex's illness by her behavior - if she's running a fever, is lethargic, cuddly, whining, more cranky than usual , etc, even if she DOESN'T have a fever or obvious signs of illness, I'll keep her at home.
But, if she has a little cold that has been in her system for a week or so, but her disposition is fine, there's just no way I'll keep her at home for such an extended period of time. I would never bring her to a playgroup, mommy and me, or something where the kids are all together in a small space, but a public space, like Target or a supermarket, as long as she keeps her hands to herself, I see no problem with it at all.
I feel the same way.

ITA! It isn't just about sick kids being out for me it is sick people in general. If you are sick stay home and don't spread it. I always feel sorry for the sick kid out b.c you know they are miserable and wish they were home in bed. I am kind of a pain about being around sick people. DH has a stomach bug last week and he shipped DD and I to my parents for a few days so he wouldn't get us sick b/c he was afraid he contaminated the house..LOL. I didn't go to my mommy class last week either b.c I didn't want to chance that DD or I were carrying it and would spread it to another mommy or baby.
I am completely the same way.

No I was asking if I was over reacting.
Your post though really wasnt I was asking about.
I reiterated a few times that I was not talking about daily chores etc, I was talking about Black Friday at Target. The parents there at 7am were trying to get a good deal not shopping for cold meds...KWIM?

Re: Why are sick kids out and about?
I compleltely agree!!!
Its one thing if its a lingering runny nose - kids can have that all season, but full fledged sick is completely inconsiderate. Cailen has had a few colds - I only would take him out after speaking with the ped, and having him assure me about 10 times in the phone call that REALLY, he's ok. Really!

Re: Why are sick kids out and about?
I understand what you are saying. There is a difference between a lingering runny nose and cough and the kids that are snotting and hacking all over the place and visually appear to be sick. IMO kids who look sick, sound sick and act sick should not be out.

Re: Why are sick kids out and about?
I was reading over some of the posts - I have to say that Cailen has had this hacking cough since he was 2 mts old!!!
He has gone to the dr. for it, was put on antibioyics for it even though his chest was clear, and got sick from the antibiotics.
After nothing could stop it, it was determined that its just something he has. Its not contagious. Its not even a "sick" cough. After all that hell - it may be excessive saliva he's choking on!!!
But people see him cough and look at me, or say - he has a bad cough, huh?
So I can see how I look like "That" mom - you know?
So, I either have to give the whole lengthy conversation, or I just say he has a condition. what am I gonna do?
But sometimes kids are contagious before you know they are sick. Like coxsacie is contagious before you know kids have it - like chicken pox. So, before I found out he had it - before the fever - he contaminated a few people at his daycare. I feel awful, and it may not have been him because, after all, someone gave it to him... and that means they had to have fever in order to spread it. So a child could have had fever with coxsacie around my child. It could have been an accident on the parents part...
I was afraid to leave the house after that. I had 2 ped. in my practice assure me he was ok before I took him out of the house again, because there is a pregnant woman at his daycare, thanksgiving was coming up and he was going to be around people... etc...

i'm surprised by this. in several of the daycares i worked at, we wouldn't allow a child to return if they still had open sores, even without fever. especially a baby that is drooling or mouthing toys in a group setting. coxsackie is terrible and painful and very hard to get rid of once it is going around the daycare. everyone really has to practice universal precautions and wash hands and bleach down things!! too bad cailen got it-it stinks.

I dont think that will ever happen, universal precaution I mean. I think in general, yes, alot of parents do keep their children home or if they send them out they monitor what is going on but then you have to agree....there are PLENTY of parents who say...OMG...I have to go to work...its a Friday...i am sending them anyway. I am not one of them but I can tell for sure they are out there. It is so apparent when you see a child who DOES NOT belong out. Not just a runny nose but a full blown contagious cold. I was at gymboree and a child vomited right next to Gilly and the parent cleaned it up and continued.

Cailen didn't have the sores on his hands and feet! Only in his throat - we wouldnt have known but the dr. saw them on his throat!
The other kids that had it (and the teacher that caught it) also had it on their throats only - not on their hands and feet!!!!

I will NEVER ever send Cailen out when he is sick. Ever. I got in a lot of trouble when I 1st returned to work because I had to take several days off because of Cailen being sick. I don't care. I will never do it for him, and for everyone else. I am very serious about that....

I think she was under the impression that he went back to daycare after he was diagnosed with the virus and by drooling on toys, etc. the virus would spread because of the open sores in his mouth.

Re: Why are sick kids out and about?
It's despicable.
Not only are you putting other children at risk.....my ped told me to keep DD home when she had a cold for HER best interest --- baby's immune system is down and she would be more susceptible to catch something much worse than a cold if she were out and about.
If you HAVE to take your sick child out - please, bundle him or her up and walk in the park. Stay out of enclosed spaces And do not sit next to me!!
