I've had one for more than 10 years and it's never, ever smelled.
But I guess water gets trapped in the rubber seal/gasket around where the door shuts and creates a mildew smell.
Problem is easily prevented by leaving the door open a bit when not in use to dry it out.

Mold in the seals and drum.
You're not supposed to close the door so it can air out properly.

we noticed this as well when we 1st got ours too. You have to keep the door open after the wash is done to let it dry out. water gets trapped in begins to smell like mildew otherwise. I dont know why but it does! :)

I manually dry all the seals and door with a towel after a wash and leave the door open for days. After that, even if I close it for a short time, it begins to smell like mildew.

my sister had hers and it smelled. She eventually left the door open and it got better.
I've had mine about a year and there is a slight smell but not moldy and I always leave the door open for a few days after I do laundry.

I used this tide stuff in a packet.
Once a year or so I use it and run the washer..any musty smell is gone.
