Re: Why purchase a "fake" bag....
Posted by neenie
I had a fake burberry a couple of years ago. There really wasn't as much thought put into it as everyone here is over-analyzing. We were at the straw market on one of the islands, i loved the way the bag looked, so i bought it. I loved the shape, style and pattern- i couldn't care less that it was a fake, i would actually keep the label part turned in b/c i wasn't trying to pass it off as real anyway. I thought that was the point of buying something- because you like the way it looks? i would NEVER pay some of the prices that these bags are asking for- i'm really not impressed by them anyway- but if i see a bag i like, i'll get it, regardless of whether or not it's up to other people's standards. I understand what you're saying about the fact that it's obvious (to those who know bags well) that it's fake, but i think it's a bit presumptious to assume that that the person carrying it cares about that.

I dont like tht knockoff's either..I would just get the real one or if I could not get a real bag Gucci, Prada etc.. then I would go for a nice bag that is not a high end name.. so many nice bags are out there.

I think some people want a real one but just can't afford it... everytime you walk down the street you bump into someone with an LV on their arm or a Chanel clutch.... for some people it may be hard to be left out of that.
But if it's fake, aren't you still "left out"?
When I was in 4th grade everyone was getting braces and/or retainers. I used to bend open a paper clip and put it in my mouth so I wouldn't feel "left out". I still didn't have the real thing, and it didn't make me feel more "in".
I ended up getting real braces in 7th grade but that's neither here nor there..lol
My point is, if you are an adult and feel "left out" because you don't have a real designer bag I think you have other things to worry about....
Not "you" persay.. but you know what I mean...
I think it's more stylish/fashion forward to buy an adorable clutch from Aldo than walk around with a fake Chanel clutch with two W's on the clasp instead of C's....
Edited to add that's just my opinion.. and others are welcome to theirs..
You make a good point, one that I completely agree with- I guess maybe they do it for the same reason you wore the fake braces... even though you didn't feel more "in" you still did it, you know?
I guess I'm not one to really say, because I do buy all real bags... But I did have a friend who had a fake LV (the white multicolor one) and she couldn't afford the real thing and she saw everyone carrying one, so she bought a fake and told everyone it "fell off the truck" Of course she knew it was fake, I don't know if she felt any better, but she told others it was real and carried it around with pride.

Why do people buy fake bags? There are plenty of gorgeous non-designer bags out there. If you don't want or can't buy a "real" designer bag, why not buy one of those other gorgeous bags?
This is how I feel, but there are a lot of ppl who 'need' the name, but can't afford hte $$
that said, when my niece was here buying up canal st, i did find a nice tan bag, by nobody I recognised, and I've been using it over a year now. It cost $30 and thats in my range for a bag ...regardless of where its from

Re: Why purchase a "fake" bag....
There are good fake bags and there are bad fake bags. If you can't tell that it's fake and you like the way that it looks, why not buy it? Personally, it's not something I would ever do and I agree that it's stealing, but if I ever did buy one, I wouldn't tell anyone that it was a fake. I'm just saying it doesn't bother me that people buy nice looking fakes.
On a side note, DH HATES it when people drive around in let's say a base model Ford Mustang, but then they buy a "GT" emblem and slap it on the back It's the same thing with the people that walk around with bags that are obviously fake. They're not fooling anyone!!! They most likely have no clue how ridiculous they look though, and I feel kind of bad for them....

I don't care how good or bad the "fake" is... it's fake..
You're paying $30 for a fake imitation instead of paying $30 for a beautiful real leather bag without a knock off logo.

I hear ya and I agree - a fake is a fake and I wouldn't buy one. But if someone IS going to buy one, at least buy a "good" one (one that doesn't look obviously fake).
To answer your original question, which I don't think I fully did, I think people buy fakes because it makes them feel good to have something that "appears" to be luxurious. They either can't afford the real thing or they don't want to spend the money on the real thing. Or they just like the look of the bag, like some posters have said. That's just my take on it.

Re: Why purchase a "fake" bag....
I could never buy a fake bag either. IMO, I know a couple of people at work one has a fake coach bag and one a fake Louis bag, the quality ***** on them. And if you know your "real" bags you can so tell when someone has a fake bag right away. It just doesn't look good in every way.

I don't believe in fakes
there are so many reason why they are bad
save your pennies for the real thing, hit the outlets- or buy a real bag in your price range
Or, you can also sign up for Bag, Borrow Steal and borrow a real bag as often as you want (for a fee). I haven't done it, but I've heard good things about it.

I think it works best if you're into very trendy designer bags. This way, you can "rent" the bag while it's in style, then return it without having paid $1000+ to own the actual bag.

this is something that came up recently - my boss (who can afford the real deal)has both real & fake bags of all different designers. she said she likes the fakes b/c it allows her to buy a lot.
but why wouldn't she just get nice bags that are less expensive...Cole Haan, Coach, Kooba, HH, etc.?
The people at my job who can afford the luxury brand stuff would NEVER buy a fake. I'm certainly not one of them that can afford it, but I don't buy fakes, either. It looks silly, IMO. Go to Marshall's and get a nice bag for $20 instead of Canal Street and you will be much better off! she's got real and fake LV's, Coach and Gucci's
like I said - her reason for wanting fakes is b/c she can buy tons of them.

I don't "love" fake bags but who cares??
Does it bother people that much if others buy a knockoff? I think it makes people feel good having something that looks like what others have. My mom bought a fake coach bag a while back and she loved it..if it made her happy, and if she couldn't afford the $358 it cost for the real thing then who cares??
Why do people buy costume jewelry instead of all diamonds?
Or why do people get boob jobs?
Or wear faux fur and leather? B/c they like the way it looks, thats all. To each their own.
I honestly don't see the correlation between fake boobs and buying a fake bag.
There are no copyrights that I know of on boobs job yet.

Re: Why purchase a "fake" bag....
This reminds me of the SATC episode when Carrie and Samantha went to go check out the fake Fendi bags sold out of a trunk in the Valley.
Carrie says: "They just looked so SAD, staring up at me from that trunk. I guess I'd rather wait for the real thing - at least then you know it's one of a kind and special or something."
Charlottle says "My marriage is a Fake Fendi!"
I need help - I know.
Anyway - back to the original post - all this did was remind me that I have LOTS of good bags just sitting in my closet just dying to come out again!
I think - to each his own. I have all real bags - but I do have a small Prada messenger bag that my mom got me in Italy - she's not sure if it's real or not. I wear it anyway!

Re: Why purchase a "fake" bag....
Fake bags I would NEVER buy now that I understand the ramifications. real bags are copyrighted for a reason. Fake bags cause people to lose jobs--fake anything causes people to lose jobs. Thats something to think about when you buy from that vendor on the corner. The people who make the real product are let go cause their legitimate company cant sell thie "real" products cause the fake bags are so readily avaialble.

Re: Why purchase a "fake" bag....
I'm just putting one more post on here and then I'm done with this topic forever
when I was 18 or 19, my friends and I went to Little Italy for the san gennaro feast. on the way home, I bought a fake LV bag for $25. I seriously loved that bag and probably used it for 2 years - maybe more.
about 7 or 8 yrs ago, I was invited to a handbag party. I couldn't believe the crappy quality of the fake bags. from far away they looked good, but each one I picked up had God awful stitching and materials. and the prices! this guy wanted over $100 for a FAKE Coach bag! sorry pal - I can go to the outlets and get a real one for $100 more, if that.

Re: Why purchase a "fake" bag....
I have to say that I have a real LV and a fake one. I only got it because I compared my real one to see if there was a difference and there was not, at all. The leather straps don't change color like a real one does though. The inside of the fake one has real suede that you could smell for weeks when I first got it.

Re: Why purchase a "fake" bag....
Some people just dont have the money to buy the real bags and like another poster said dont want to be left out. However, i dont really think it matters whether its fake or not. A bag is a bag and even some of the designer bags are cheesy looking and dont last long. Just b/c it costs a lot of money doesnt mean its better.
I dont buy fake bags like Louis Vuitton etc. b/c i hate the way even the real ones look.

I guess I'm the "pertentious (sp)" chick poster?
I didn't even bother to recheck this thread until someone informed me it got really nasty toward me...which I don't understand. I'm allowed to have an opinion, no? I stated how I was joking about the "fake boob" comparison...I was typing fast, dealing with a crying baby and didn't get to clarify my comparison which wasn't even much of anything, it was a joke more than anything.
And I know I wrote something about people being pretentious to really take the time to see if someones bag was fake or not...what is wrong with that statement?? I still stand by it, I don't know...I can't wrap MY head around people caring that much that's all. I would hate to know someone was looking at my mother or friend and thinking how it's funny, or cheap, or stupid (whatever word you want to use) that they purchased a fake bag.
That is ALL. To each their own, I did not know my post made that much of an impact. These things don't matter much to me I guess. I apologize to anyone I offended.

If my thread hadn't been removed you would have seen why I was "offended" in a sense. You basically stated that LI has it's fair share of pertentious people who care to take the time to check for fake bags then post about it here.. "how stupid" were your exact words I believe. My reply basically was telling you that I don't do all the things you assumed, I just asked a question. I didn't say there was anything wrong with carrying a fake bag, I just wondered why people did so.. that was all. I thought it was innocent enough until you replied with what i thought was a nasty comment.
To each his own, you are entitled to your opinion about fake bags and real bags, I didn't think it was necessary to call the original poster (myself) pertentious and "stupid".
nuff said.
