Why purchase a "real" bag?
I just read through the "fake" bag thread...all this talk about people "needing" the brand name and not being able to afford it or whatever.
but isn't there a certain need, a certain status, in buying a "real" bag too?
I am floored at what people will spend on a CANVAS bag, just b/c it has a logo on it.
or it has a fashion house name on the buckle.
I don't think there is much of a difference between buying a real LV bag with the insignia all over it and buying a fake one with the insignia all over it.
you are still sending a message out there...whether that is your "intention" or not.
and buying the canvas version of the leather bag is practically the same thing. you are cheaping out. plain and simple.
there's nothing wrong with it. it's your choice. why should anyone care?

Re: Why purchase a "real" bag?
Because I believe in copyright and protecting people who "created" the bag.
There is a lot behind an expensive bag (designer salaries, overhead, etc...). Most designers worked very hard to make what their brand is today.
I feel it's stealing from them. It's very easy to steal an idea from someone vs coming up with an original idea on your own or paying for such expense.

I am not asking why you think it's wrong to buy a fake bag. my sister worked for Chanel in intellectual property. I know what goes on there.
I am asking why someone plunks down a nice chunk of change for a bag b/c it's designer.
that is all.
I would not buy a fake.

I agree. Also, I know the general counsel for a very popular designer whose bags are often copied. She told me that many of the people who produce these fake bags use child labor and are also in the drug trade. In fact, she said they get more excited about crates of fake bags than drugs because they make so much more money on the bags compared with the cost of production.
ETA: Just read your clarification - I've bought designer bags because I like them, because I think of them as investments (if they're well taken care of) and, if you're going to keep a bag for awhile, it makes sense to me to get one that's well-crafted. I would certainly buy a non-name brand bag that I thought was well made. I generally don't buy very trendy bags because I'd rather not set out the $$$$ for something that will be out of style in a few months.

I will say again. I am not asking why you buy real in lieu of fake. I am not asking about the evils of breaking copyright laws and fueling the black market purse trade.
I am asking, simply, why you buy a designer bag.
someone on the other thread made the point of their being MANY lovely and inexpensive bags that are not wannabes or knockoffs.
so, why save up so much money to purchase a bag that you can't afford outright? (the global you...for all I know, you BlondJD are rich and have 7 Kelly bags )

Re: Why purchase a "real" bag?
besides all the reason why I think fakes are gross, wrong etc
the reason I love to buy "real" bags is simply b/c I like the style, they last for years, have resale value if I get sick of them
I still don't pay for price for most of the ones I have - except for a Gucci or LV
but there is nothing like going to the store, picking out the bag- having it wrapped up
it's an experince - I enjoy it, I can afford it- so I do it
I would never buy anything just b/c of the name- I have to love the bag and the style

Re: Why purchase a "real" bag?
I bought my Coach bag because it was a treat to myself for getting my Master's, but the main reason is because it's functional. I'd been on a search for the perfect bag for YEARS and this Coach bag is IT! It's big but not too big, and has a pocket on either end which I love because I never have to fish around for my keys and cell phone anymore. I've had plenty of non-brand inexpensive bags but none of them ever did the job. So for me, buying a "real" bag was part luxury, but mostly functionality. I don't buy bags very often. Shoes are more my thing

Re: Why purchase a "real" bag?
I only have one real bag which in fact I didnt purchase but I think I would of...Its an LV.
Yes it isnt leather but its made real well, will last me forever, and will most likely be in style forever therefore, it will be worth the money spent on it. I love this bag.
Other than that, I dont purchase real pricey bags since I also get bored quickly with them and like change and yes, styles to change.

Ah, I'd love to be living the dream
exactly
to me...things like this are luxury.
I wouldn't care is the Hermes name was NO WHERE NEAR this bag. everything about it says "la dolce vita!"
that kind of bag sadly does not reflect the rest of the life I am living....
I guess that is the point. it's a bag of the uber rich. just having a bag like that makes me feel like a wannabe...I wannabe rich.
I mean I do. but I don't want to front about it.

Re: Why purchase a "real" bag?
Recently I have a problem sounding obnoxious, so please forgive me if this comes across as snotty...
I buy real bags because:
a. I can afford them (sometimes ) b. I find they stand the test of time - something breaks, it's fixed c. The style and ORIGINALITY of the "real" bag. d. it's a luxury, and who doesn't like luxury??
It doesn't bother me when people buy fakes. I started that other thread because I simply didn't understand why people do it. If you want to walk around with a fake Prada bag that says "Frada" on the little well known upside down triangle, by all means go ahead. But myself personally, if I couldn't afford a "real" bag (which I can't always), I'd want to be more original with my purchase of a non knock-off.

I also agree word for word. I would rather have 5 NICE designer bags that I know will hold up to wear and tear and I will have for years than 20 bags that were nowhere near as expensive that I don't love.
I also love that even on days when I am stuck in jeans and a t shirt at least I have a hot bag!

There are a lot of nice expensive things I can't afford. I don't go around looking for copies.
The fact that it is expensive makes it also "desirable", with the whole image being it.
Why shouldn't people buy more cubic circonias instead of diamonds? What is the difference? It's fake and nobody is fooled. Yet, we still want the real thing, don't we? Because it is expensive and prestigious. That "non affordable" factor make it even more appealing. If diamonds were $10, would we want them or would they have the same appeal?

obnoxiousness doesn't bother me one bit
and I think that once a bag is mass produced, originality goes out the window anyway.
I dont' think it's original to own a real LV insignia bag to be honest. real or fake, they are everywhere.
I guess the same reason YOU like the style of the bag, those that purchase fakes like it as well. yes, there are differences in the quality of the materials used...but some fakes can surprise you in how close they get to the real thing...what does that tell you? that in the end, it's the NAME that separates them.
you are willing to pay for the name. some people are not. fine.
but the psychological reasonings that were offered make me
there could be just as many offered up for ther pesron living a modest life purchasing an immodest bag (b/c they can "afford" it) as for a person living a modest life buying the modestly priced knockoff version.

Re: Why purchase a "real" bag?
I usually just really like the bag. Same reason someone is drawn to a non designer bag...it's not the label it's the bag. I read a lot of fashion magazines and am really into new trends and fashion. With that said I only buy one if I can afford it and it is usually a treat to myself.

Not when the designer only makes a handful of them, then discontinues that style. And if you take all the fake LV's off the street, you wouldn't see them EVERYWHERE...

then they are not mass produced
In Venice, there are many Africans selling knockoffs in front of the VERY stores they are "stealing" from. it's very bizarre.
but it's for the tourists. over there, the average Joe or Joan doesn't own a $2000 bag. the go down the block to the guy gucci buys the leather from and get a fabu bag from him.

I don't personally spend my money on expensive designer bags, mainly because we just don't have that kind of disposable income.
I do think, however, that buying designer comes with some sort of guaranty. Doesn't Coach and LV replace any of its items if it gets damaged? I think that's kind of a plus...........

no. it's not like that at all. they are craftsmen too. they take pride in their work. they sell the materials to the design houses....but they sell their own stuff.

Not a Gucci but still great quality bag. Nothing wrong with that!
Just like fabric stores in NYC. They sell to top designers but you can buy the fabric too (sometimes!).
I don't consider that to be the same as buying a fake.

Re: Why purchase a "real" bag?
I have had fake bags when I was younger. I found that the quality was really bad and broke after short time. Now I would only use the real ones...they are better quality, last a long time and I have the means to buy them.
