Will you get a PhD?
And if so...in what?
I am way ahead of myself but I know nothing about going beyond a Masters degree.
I have some of the Marine Corps' money leftover upon completion of the Masters degree for education PLUS a year still on active duty so maybe a tiny bit of a jump start??? A free class or two wouldn't hurt.

Re: Will you get a PhD?
I am thinking of it, but right now, money is too tight. Heopfully in the future. I am thinking of an EdD or a PhD, depending on what I want to focus on.
I don't want to be an administrator at ALL, but would like to possibly be a teacher that teaches teachers in a college setting or via professional development.

Re: Will you get a PhD?
Thought about it and was told by someone that I should really think about it, but I just can't even think about the course work now let alone when I have a family. Maybe in 20 years, we'll see. Let me pay off this loan first!

Karen, I could've written the same exact thing! Also, I would like an actual teaching job first before I decide to go for my PhD or EdD. One thing at a time!

Re: Will you get a PhD?
I have a doctorate, but I teach college courses, not elementary/secondary. However, the higher ed. field is flooded with retired teachers and administrators who want to teach college education classes. Adjuncts are cheaper than tenure-track faculty, and tenure-track jobs are hard to come by (and, by the way, do not pay as well as public school teacher positions on LI!). They generally go for retired administrators--most of the ed. instructors I teach with are retired superintendents. One or two classes is a drop in the bucket for a doctorate--I think mine was something like 90 credits total. But it can't hurt. To anyone thinking of teaching ed. classes at the college level (even theory/principles of ed classes as opposed to admin), try to get experience in admin.
I don't think I could have ever made the commitment to the doctorate (while working f/t) if I had children. I can't imagine juggling work and the program while having children (it was literally every night and weekend for years). Anyone considering it, I would urge you to do it before you have kids if you have the luxury of time. I gave up most weekend invitations for four years, my entire married life. I graduated in May and this is my first time ever having weekends with DH.
Master's degrees were nothing compared to the doctorate. You can't really even fathom the amount of work and research until you are involved with it.

Re: Will you get a PhD?
An Ed.D. is a massive time commitment, and you really need to know and think about why you want it, and what you plan to do once you have it. My Ed.D. will be in Instructional Leadership, and I plan to continue working in higher education administration, so that was part of my motivation.
Keep in mind, too, that your commitment to the dgeree is also tough on friends and family - it's been quite a few years now that I've been saying "Sorry, can't do dinner, I have a paper." So it's important that you have a support system in place that will understand when you can't get together all the time because of other commitments. If it wasn't for my DH, I don't think I could do it - he's been my rock when I've wanted to quit, and literally has taken care of 90% of the stuff around the house when I'm busy with papers and reading.
This is why I 100% agree with nov04libride's statement about balancing a doctorate, work and children. I applaud anyone who can do it - because I know I'd never be able to handle it.
It's tough, but if its truly what you want, then I think its worth it. I have 2 masters degrees, and honestly I've never worked so hard in school before this program. And I know when I'm done and look back on the challenges, I'll feel like I've accomplished something for myself.
If you have any questions, feel free to FM.

Ditto to both of you. Im always intrigued by the jobs of the TC. Ive seen them only do reading/poetry. do they do all subject areas ?
who hires them, Columbia ?
I also agree with teaching first. But I plan to be in school for the rest of my life.

The Teachers College people are hired by Colombia. Many of them are Teachers College students. Most do not have a doctorate, but have experience in teaching and using the TC program.
I hate reader's and writers' workshop, so i would not want that job. I would think I would use an EdD to teach at the college level (pre-service teachers), to teach professional development courses for teachers (there are many agencies and/or school districts that would hire you for that and also for my own intellectual curiousity. I have always loved school and would love to have the terminal degree in my field.

Somebody I know from work has two children under the age of 4, and graduated with her doctorate in December (when I was graduating with my master's-we went to the same college). I admire that she is young and she is a teacher and still had time to get her doctorate, but for someone who has gone through it like you have and describing the time consuming process, it really makes me admire her even more.
I give a lot of credit to people who get their doctorate. I know it's a huge commitment. I think it's something I'll consider for the way distant future, when my children are grown. It's DH's turn to go back to school anyway (he has his A.A., and has been dying to go back and get his B.A.).

People graduated with me who had small children, and with a strong support system it is definitely possible. I just think for me I wouldn't be the mother I would want to be while working on my dissertation every night and weekend. I'd regret losing out on that time with my children. School will be there in 10 years, but for me I feel like kids are only small once. I know someone who is a Principal and has two kids under 2 and is finishing her dissertation, but she has a 7-day a week live-in nanny and from what I can tell isn't able to spend too much time with her kids.

Nope. I'm doing exactly what I want to be doing (classroom teacher) so there is no reason for me to get a PhD.

Re: Will you get a PhD?
yes, I'm sure...I just can't stop, but I made a promise to myself that I would not go back for another masters (I have 2) and that it would be a PhD. I started at StonyBrook, non-matriculated, and I would like to apply formally within the next year or two.
It is for history though and not EdD. Although I do toss the idea around in my head to go into admin, but there are aspects of moving up that ladder that I don't want to do (read: AP)

If I ever decide to teach college in the future, then I'll look into it. Right now, it's not necessary at the middle school level.

Re: Will you get a PhD?
Not a chance! I've been told by my principal that I have "leadership potential" and that I should pursue administration, but I politely told him that I am living my life's dream and that there is nothing else I would want to do. As a special education teacher there are so many opportunities to try different jobs- self-contained, inclusion, consultant teacher, resource room- that I don't think I'll ever get bored or want for something new. The only other thing I might want to do is get my master's in literacy or maybe be a Wilson teacher/trainer down the line now that I'm certified. But I don't have the commitment for a PhD or anything else like that, particularly if I don't see myself using it.
