Re: Will you raise your kids the same way your parents raised you?

Absolutely not. There is not much about my parents relationship nor the way they chose to parent, that I respect or would want to pass on to my child.

I would like to raise our kids the way my mom did....She did an awesome job by herself and people always commend her on how well my brothers and I turned out!

Hmm...I'll take a little bit of how my parents raised me but all-in-all I will raise my children differently. My Dad was pretty strict with me and in-turn I would spent so much time hiding stuff behind his back and I became a really good liar...not the outcome he probably wanted. I will try to be more of a "friend" (with discipline of course)to my children and will encourage them to talk to me about all subjects. I also won't be as naive as my parents were.

No. I will encourage my kids to be part of something. My parents didn't care about college, sports, extra curricular activities, etc. I did them all because I was motivated and I wanted more out of life.

I want to raise my kid(s) to be open and be able to discuss anything with me. I was so afraid to talk about certain things with my parents.

Me too! This is a big thing with me. I had a big problem talking to my parents about alot of things, that I wish I had someone to talk too about.

Re: Will you raise your kids the same way your parents raised you?

Yes, my parents were very strict and I hope to be that way to an extent also. I believe the "discipline" I got as a kid helped me to be mature and professional in the real world.

I hope to, but think that there will be differences since the times are different.

Re: Will you raise your kids the same way your parents raised you?

Before I had DS, I would have said NO WAY, I would be totally different.

Now that I have him...i feel and sound more like my mom every day!

I can't say how I am going to be in the future.

ETS: The one thing I am sure about is that I will NOT be my child's friend. My mom always said, "you have enough friends you need parents." and I totally agree with this.

Pretty much.

My parents were pretty liberal with us. I never had a curfew, I just had to come home "at a reasonable hour". My parents trusted me, and as a teenager- I didn't want to lose that trust, so I behaved (somewhat) responsibly. I was also expected to live with DH before I got married (my mom thought it was very important).

Of course i hope to be a "cooler" mom, but I'm sure DD won't think I'm so cool when she is a teenager, no matter what I do Chat Icon

Re: Will you raise your kids the same way your parents raised you?

For the most part, yes. My mom had rules and consequence that were mostly fair. She didn't demand perfection, but she did expect certain things of me.

She did, however, make me very fearful of a lot of experiences. I want my kids to trust me enough to come to me with major things, I don't want them to be a nervous wreck about things like I was.

Re: Will you raise your kids the same way your parents raised you?

No, actually we want to be more strict Chat Icon For many diff. reasons. We want to make sure they experience the away at school experience....that is one thing for example. Neither of our parents encouraged us to do that and we both regret it.

Re: Will you raise your kids the same way your parents raised you?

I will be a little more liberal. My grandparents raised me and they did so VERY old school so I feel that I missed out on a lot that normal kids got to do. I will however, instill the same moral values in my children just wont be so overly strict like they were.

Re: Will you raise your kids the same way your parents raised you?

I will raise my kids similar to how I was raised. My parents were never strict on us but we knew the rules & the boundaries. If we disobeyed them, we knew we had to pay the price. I think the kids in today's society truly don't understand nor know what rules are. They are way too liberal & expect everything handed to them. My kids will work for their first car, just like DH & I did. Nothing was ever handed to me & I think it helped me to value my $$ now in a later stage of my life. Money was not just something that I knew I had & spent it & expected to be bailed out.

I want my kids to know the meaning of responsiblilty & taking actions for your decisions. Seeing first hand with today's generation, they truly don't get it & think there way is the ONLY way.

Re: Will you raise your kids the same way your parents raised you?

yes! I think they did a good job- my brother was treated differently and it shows

I was given alot by most people's standards- but I also had to have an after school and summer job- as well as get good grades -

they weren't strict- but theyn set rules and there was punishments for breaking them

Re: Will you raise your kids the same way your parents raised you?

I surely will! My parents were always fair in the way they treated us (my brother and I) and gave us just enough freedom to see if we would make the right decisions and be trusted. Because of that, we had a great childhood and I feel became the decent adults that we are today. They never pushed us, only guided and supported and I am grateful for that.

Re: Will you raise your kids the same way your parents raised you?

I only hope that I can do as good a job as my parents did. I will do some things differently. But as for morals, lifestyle, beliefs, respect, honesty.... absolutely.
