Re: Wireless router ?

from what I understand, wireless connections do run slower, but it shouldn't be *that* bad.

We have a desktop computer and then my laptop, which is wireless--- neither one seems to run faster than the other....

I have a laptop and a desk top - we just installed a linksys wrieless router for the laptop - now the desktop is NOT wireless - we got a router that did both broadband and wireless....

What model router did you get ? Are your computers laptops or desktops or both? If you have a desktop - how far is the router from it ??

Re: Wireless router ?

As long as you are within range of the wireless router, you shouldn't see any speed difference. Yes, wireless routers are a bit slower than direct connections, but that's really irrelevant.

A Ferrari has a higher top speed than a Dodge, but on the LIE (going the legal speed), it doesn't matter.

First, wireless local area networks (WLANs) feature differing levels of performance depending on which Wi-Fi standard they support. 802.11b WLANs offer maximum theoretical bandwidth of 11 Mbps. 802.11a and 802.11g WLANs offer theoretical bandwidth up to 54 Mbps. (In contrast, typical wired Ethernets run at 100 Mbps.)

Your wireless connection is from 11-54 MBps, vs 100 MBs with a hard-wire. However, your Internet speed is probably around 20 MBps. Unless you have a super-fast Internet connection, and a bad router, you won't see the speed difference.
