I am VERY worried. I'm a teacher, but this is only my 2nd year in the county, and I'm out on disability because of a bad back. There were loads of new teachers hired this year, but being that I am not there right now, I am a little bit worried...
DH has INSANE job security because his boss once tried to replace him and literally COULDN'T...though if they lose their biggest client, a health insurance company, 80% of DH's responsibilities are dealing with that company and it wouldn't be looking so good for him.

its always in the back of my mind whenever i hear/read anything about the economy these days. but i like to think im okay as im in an industry that isnt going to be effected. our product is a daily necessity that everyone uses and is not considered a luxury.

Me too.
Generally speaking, IMO, there's no such thing as "job security". Now with the economy tanking the way it is, just makes me more nervous.

Yes. I work for a private recruitment firm and my business is very much based on how the economy is doing.
DH works in IT and so far he's not concerned. I worry for him!
 to everyone that this turns around soon.

I agree that in the general sense there's no job security b/c you can screw up at any time and it could be worthy of automatic dismissal. But i interpreted this question as being solely in relation to the economy- in which case, there are many positions that are not dependant upon market changes.

I think I'm fine but I worry about my DH's job  all the time. His business has been affected by the downturn..(the co. he works for).

As a teacher I am a little worried even though I have tenure and seniroity. Back in the early 90's my district excessed teachers because of the economy. Back then the excess list went as far back as 15 years in the district. Now granted there have been a lot of teacher hired in my district since me, it is always a worry in my mind!

I do worry about DH- he is a tenured professor at a private college, but the least senior. I wonder what will happen if students can't get student loans.
I wouldn't worry about the students not getting loans...student loans cannot be included in bankruptcy...they are the safest loans for a lender to give
We went through a layoff with DH after 9/11, so we are always thinking about it...but he is pretty secure right now...if he was to be laid off, he would go to some of his clients and take his services inhouse/contract...his company knows this (the clients love him...not the company) and doesn't want to lose these big clients.
I feel pretty secure, but have a back up...but I might have to wait a bit for the back up to be ready

I'm not really worried for my job. I have tenure and 5 years with the district. But districts have excessed so even teachers with tenure aren't all that safe. DH works for verizon and that scares the hell out of me because if the economy gets really bad, I don't think people are going to worry about if they have FIOS or not.

DH is in restaurant management...while that is an iffy business, he is the gem of the industry. A lot of people would lose their jobs before they even considered him.

I don't think my job will be affected but I am not naive to the fact that you never know what might happen. The way I rationalize it in my head is that there is nothing I can do about it if it does happen.

DH and I work in higher ed (design/it and research/technology respectively) so I am feeling okay about our situation. I do however worry endlessly for all my friends and family in finance/consulting.

I work for the gov't and so does my dh so I hope we are safe.
But my sister was going to quit her job (in finance in NYC) and move her and her whole family to PA and it looks as if that might not happen because she doesn't know if she can find a job in PA with everything going on.
