Woman Dies in hospital Waiting room
Horrible!!!
NEW YORK (AP) -- Video from a surveillance camera at a Brooklyn, New York, hospital shows a woman dying on the floor of a psychiatric emergency room while people nearby ignore her.
Surveillance video shows a woman lying on the hospital floor for almost an hour before anyone helped her.
The video was released Monday by lawyers suing Kings County Hospital.
The lawsuit alleges neglect and abuse of mental health patients at the facility.
The video shows the 49-year-old woman keeling over and falling out out of her chair on June 19.
She lies facedown on the floor, then thrashes before going still.
About an hour passed before someone realized what was happening and tried to help.
The agency that runs the municipal hospital -- the city's Health and Hospitals Corp. -- fired several staffers as a result.

This might sound a little off-topic, but in cases like this, WHY does the hospital release such a video tape knowing that it puts them in such a bad light?

Ok I do feel very bad for her but do we know this patient? Maybe she does this all the time meaning goes in there and complains or causes trouble so no one took her seriously.
It just seems to cruel for me to grasp that is why I feel like this patient had a reputation for playing tricks or causing trouble.
It is a Pysch ER. JMO.

I don't know. Maybe that is standard there. Maybe patients come in all the time and just hang out there and say they have problems.
I hate seeing that video though. They should really stop showing it.

Since it was a psychiatric ER she is not in the usual type of waiting room. Typically, there are locked "units" and there is a common room/waiting room within the unit. she was likely being held for observation which is why she was there 24 hours. In the video she is in a hospital gown. She probably was evaluated at some point (and likely more than once as is required). She was probably sitting watching tv or whatever and no one checked on her. I worked in another NYC Psych ER and this was the set up. I am not defending or excusing the situation, just explaining the likely context.
