Re: Woman Dies in hospital Waiting room
Unfortunately, I think stuff like this happens more often than it should.
A few months ago my SIL went to the ER in the middle of the night with horrible abdominal pains. They told her it would be at least 8-9 hours until they could even triage her. She went to another ER at a different hospital who got her in right away. Turns out her appendix was about to burst. Had she stayed at the other hospital she could have become septic and died

Ok I do feel very bad for her but do we know this patient? Maybe she does this all the time meaning goes in there and complains or causes trouble so no one took her seriously.
It just seems to cruel for me to grasp that is why I feel like this patient had a reputation for playing tricks or causing trouble.
It is a Pysch ER. JMO.
No matter what, the hospital has a responsiblilty to care for their patients whether they"cry wolf" frequently or not. This was clear and blatent disregard. The hospital was aware of it b/c they forged records after the fact. Kings County Hospital has a bad reputation from previous psych incidents and this will ensure that something is done about the hospital. I will not say much more about the case but I do know that reform and change will be imlemented immediately as a result.

OMG!! It may be just your opinion but its a really stereotypical one. And that is just the type of attitude that probably led to this. Psychiatric patients deserve no different treatment than anyone else. Psyhiatric illness is a biological illness like anything else. Sadly many people think the way you do, which is probably what led to this.
If she was mentally ill she wasnt "playing tricks" or "causing trouble". If she had psychiatric symptoms, they should be treated. Even if she was "playing tricks" that means she deserved to die alone on the floor, or that somehow makes it more acceptable???? And if she was on the floor for ANY reason, someone should have asked her why in the very least.
ETA: I just read the rest of the thread and watched the newsday video nd I am in tears. Mental illness effects 1 in 5 people, that some people still think the way they do, assume that because she was in a psych ER she is "crying wolf" and that even people in the ER ignored her is so sad to me. For the record most people in psych ERs dont want to be there. And like a PP said, psych ERs are designed to hold people up to 72 hours for evaluation, after that they must be discharged or admitted.

Re: Woman Dies in hospital Waiting room
Doesn't shock me at all. I work near Kings County Hospital's "G" Building. They are not known for brilliant psych care. They do NOT take all psychpatients that come in for evaluation and many present well upon coming in. But if you get shot, they will run to your side - good trauma center.
That being said, should I go into labor early this summer while I am at work, those close to me (thank G-d I work with my sister and an LIFer) they are instructed NOT to take me to King's County Hospital for delivery. I'd rather have my kid in the cafeteria of my school. I feel THAT strongly about it.

I never said that she deserved this or this is how I think she should have been treated at all. But it seems strange that so many people ignored her. That is why it seems like somethng occured before this that we don't know about. That is all!!!!!!
And FYI I have 3 people in my family that have mental health problems and I know how "they" meaning my family members can behave.

This is truly the best response!!!
No matter what the situation, she shouldn't have died on the floor. The fact that the hospital actually made up records regarding her care is a true testament to their disregard. How can anyone justify a nurse walking up to a person prone on the floor, kicking that person and walking away?!
I'm sorry, there is just no excuse for what was done.

Re: Woman Dies in hospital Waiting room
I've worked in various psych ERs and this level of care is never acceptable. It doesn't matter how many times a patient comes in to the ER nor does it matter what they present with. They should be checked on often, NOT left to sit there. This is deplorable. Kings County (I work across the street from there) was already being investigated for patient mistreatment. They know they did something wrong and FALSIFIED records to cover their azzes. It's truly unfortunate what happened to this woman. It doesn't matter that she was mentall ill- she was a person who didn't deserve that kind of treatment.

Re: Woman Dies in hospital Waiting room
We have been following this story at my hospital and I am just as shocked as everyone else, but I can totally see how this can happen. I am familiar with Kings County as I know people that work there, and being that I also work in a Brooklyn ER, we transfer patients to them, and recieve patients from there.
My feeling is that this woman does this all the time, that is why nobody came over to her immediately. Unless you work in an ER, you have no idea what act people put on for attention or to get drugs, mentally ill or not. You would not believe it if you didn't see it for yourself.
If the person sees they get attention every time they pretend to fall/fake a seizure/scream/yell, they will do it over and over again. You cannot give in to every display of attention, and unfortunately, I know that ER staff can get so used to this manipulative behavior that they assume her falling on the floor was just another attempt at attention or to get drugs. This could happen in ANY ER, not just Kings County.
However, as much as it would annoy the piss out of me to go over and have to interrupt someone's academy award winning performance for attention/drugs, I would still go over EVERY TIME to make sure that this time she really isn't in trouble, especially since she is not in front of me where I can take a good look at her.
People that work in ER's know (or they should anyway) that these are the patients who burn you, because they are the last ones you expect to crash on you. In my book, you are acting crazy because you are physically sick until proven otherwise. Years ago, many more people like this woman died because once you have a psych history or you are acting crazy (and were then labeled a psych), your abnormal behavior or physical ailments used to be automatically believed to be due to psych disease, when really they were something else like a bleed in the brain or infection.
What we do not know in this case is, who is responsible for watching over the cameras? Is it the nursing staff? Security? It is entirely possible that the security staff is designated to watch that waiting are while the nursing staff observes inpatients, and that no one told the nurses/doctors until it was too late. It seemed to me from the video that security got the nurse at some point, and the nurse then observed the patient in distress and called a code right away.
Another interesting point is that the security guards were the ones to release the tape to the media. Trying to save their own butts somehow?? Seems like they did this to make the medical staff look bad, but maybe they were the ones responsible for alerting medical staff if something seemed wrong and they didn't do their job.
I cannot defend the false documentation from the medical staff, that is inexcusable. I don't know if they were busy or just lazy, but that should have never happened.

Youu've got to be kidding me with your post...if it were your relative...I hardly think your response would be the same.
The way the mentally ill historically have been treated and ignored is unacceptable. It's people with your attitude who will continue the unfair treatment by justifying the negligent actions of the treatment providers.
I would hate to need to be seen at the ER that you work at. I probably would not walk out alive.

Wow...just Wow!
So what is the excuse for the nurse walking over, kicking the woman and walking away when she got no response? Or the fact that the security guards looked at her and walked away? How does this tape exonerate them?
Unreal....I can only hope you never have to deal with mentally ill people....

I HAVE worked in an ER- specifically psych. It didn't matter how many times a person was there or if they exhibited attention seeking behavior. I NEVER would have allowed a patient to fall to the floor and not check on them. I had plenty of patients who were drug seeking and/or chronic patients. IT DIDN'T MATTER. Every time a person came into the ER, we checked on them and attempted to wake them up when asleep to ensure they were ok. Someone being manipulative is not reason enough to ignore a patient.

Who said I would leave them on the floor and ignore them??? Don't put words in my mouth. If you read my post and understood, you would see that I was saying that I NEVER ignore a psych patient because they too often get brushed off for thier behavior when its actually a medical cause for their abnormal behavior. All I said was that its not uncommon for psych patients/drug seekers to exhibit manipulative behavior and I can see how some people in some places could become desensitized to it, EVEN THOUGH ITS WRONG. As an experienced ER nurse with a huge psych population, I know how to care for psych patients, and also had my fair share of patients who were labeled psych by other ER's, doctors and were found by our place to actually not be psych at all, but have things such as strokes, brain tumors, subarachnoid hemmorages, electrolyte imbalances. I could go on. That is why I don't underestimate ANYONE at ANYTIME like what happened here at county.

Re: Woman Dies in hospital Waiting room

I NEVER would have allowed a patient to fall to the floor and not check on them.
This is the million dollar question and was not answered in the media.. Did anyone other than the security guard see the patient fall on the floor???? I doubt it. Once the nurse walked in and checked her for responsiveness she responded right away. That is why I find it hard to believe that she saw this woman on the floor for an hour and then made this mad dash to save her.

Wow.. it would annoy you to check on someone like this woman?
ITA with MrsFlatbread here!
Nope, it would never annoy me to help a person in need. There is a difference between a person who actually needs help and someone who faking so that they can get morphine/dilaudid, you name it. They take time away from patients who need care and THAT is what annoys me. I am not saying that this woman was one of those people either, I am just talking in general.

No one said you would. No need to be so defensive. I was not referring to you. I was referring to the case. So please don't put words in my mouth. Never once did I say YOU.

Wow...just Wow!
So what is the excuse for the nurse walking over, kicking the woman and walking away when she got no response? Or the fact that the security guards looked at her and walked away? How does this tape exonerate them?
Unreal....I can only hope you never have to deal with mentally ill people....
If you ever took a CPR class the first thing you do is check for responsiveness. That was what she was doing, although she could have done it with her hands and not foot.
In my post I said that I actually blame the security guards and think that they did not notify anyone about her falling on the floor. If they didn't tell the doctors/nurses that she was on the floor, how would they would have known until they did their next check which should have been MUCH sooner than what happened. They should have told someone right away and didn't. I believe they were wrong.

In that case, I apologize. I thought you were refferring to me personally. I get defensive because I do care about my psych patients. I treat them with the utmost respect, and they know and appreciate that.
