Woman holding sign and panhandling
As I was driving off the Washington Ave exit on the LIE, there was an older woman holding a sign begging for money. She caught my eye and gave me a pleading face. There was traffic backed up but she did not approach any of the cars. As bad as I felt for her, I couldn't help thinking of all the scammers out there.
Has anyone else ever seen her?

Was driving over the George Washington Bridge last Saturday. The panhandlers stand in between the lanes as everyone drives by. It's ridiculous. Then you drive past where they live under the middle of the bridge and have their piss containers. Thanks, Deblasio.

There is a woman holding a sign all the time at exit 63 off LIE ( I wonder if it is the same lady). She has a cell phone, and even saw her get dropped off by a a man in s car.

He came to one of our company Christmas parties once because his company was looking to be a customer of ours. He also works in my building in nyc. He is a complete arrogant asshole who is totally full of himself but if i lived in nyc I would still vote for him over DeBlasio. I would vote for a monkey over him. It would be an improvement

She rotates with a man....I always wonder where her children are that she has written on the sign and pleading for.

I see this with a man on service road of the grand central pkwy. For a while it was one man and I was thinking of giving him a feelw dollars but now ive seen 5 different men, idk if they rotate. Its strange.

This makes me so sad. One day, DS saw one of these people and read the sign. He asked about the woman holding it and said maybe we can help her. I hate that you just don't know. I'm sure most are scams, but what about people who are truly in need and are just trying to find anyway to help their family. I know there are places to help, but it's never enough. I had such a hard time trying to explain to DS that the person was very likely not in need so much as greedy. Because maybe they weren't. It breaks my heart.

I accept that. I really do. Yet my safety and the safety of my child trumps that. Hence I will not roll down my window to anyone. Way too many scary stories out there and crazy ass people.
But I do accept that there are people right here on Long Island who are in need and that is why I donate to local charities who assist those in need in the area and who I know are legit.
That is all I can do at this point.

I totally understand that and basically agree - that is why I didn't roll down my window. But it's just so hard to be telling your child how we need to help those less fortunate and then someone (who may or may not actually be in need) asks for help and we say "no, not this one."
No judgement - just sad.

Actually, the panhandling on the street is pretty much always a scam. Truly needy people aren't standing on the corner begging. They're just not. Sorry, but this is textbook drug addicts/scammers who do this for a living. It's sad, but it's true.
There are PLENTY of needy people. Most LI'ers actually DO know that, which is why the panhandling works so well. These losers prey on people's guilt.

So, I used to live in Maryland and some co-workers and I got to talking about pan handlers and that most people feel the same that it's a scam or the money is used for drugs/alcohol and yes, I think the majority are fake. To prove it, we decided to try something different (yes, young and dumb). We dressed up one of our friends in heals and a fake fur jacket, parked a Mercedes on the corner and got her a glittery sign that said "need money for my American Express bill" Well holy cow, you cannot imagine how many people stopped, gave money, took pictures - we did this for about 20-25 minutes before the cops showed up. We handed them the money and told them to donate the funds. Sad, really that people gave money for this joke, which clearly, everyone knew was a joke but people who legit need the money can't get anything.
