Re: Work or Stay Home
If I was married and had kids, I would like to work part time, maybe 1 or 2 nights a week and stay home with kids the rest of the time. If I did not have kids yet, I would want to continue to work full time or else I would go nuts at home alone all day!

Re: Work or Stay Home
Nope...maybe a month max but then I would need at least a part time job or something...staying home drives me nuts.
If we were insanely rich then maybe because I could travel and shop all day and go to spas and parties and stuff like that but unless my las name is gonna be Hilton...No.
I was home for 4 mos on maternity leave and I wanted to pull my hair out.

I was always told... "may you have your degrees and never have to use it...."
I just think that's a weird statement for professors (or anyone really, unless the goal was just to get an MRS degree and not work) to say. I am working on my dissertation for my doctorate, and all we ever talk about is "how are you going to contribute to society? how is your research going to change your field of expertise? how can you get published as much as possible so that others may benefit from your research?" No professor ever said to me "I hope you never have to use what you are sitting here learning." I agree that education is never a waste regardless of whether it is applicable to a job, but I just cannot imagine anyone saying I hope you never have to use it.
This was a quote from my parents...... I have beyond a masters degree and am very happy being where I am in my life right now.I took care of TWO SICK PARENTS and would do it again if I G-d forbid had to.... Both my parents have passed away very young- 53, and 60. I was a very devoted daughter, and know I can look at myself in the mirror and know I helped them as much as I was able to. Yes, I did miss out on going out a lot to clubs etc, but had good freinds that stood by me, etc. I have had a hard life, and am at a place right now where we have enough $$ that I do not have to work. Sure, extra money is nice.... I am very appreciative of what I have. I am very sensitive about this topic, and I am sorry to crawl over your response.

It sounds like you were a wonderful daughter. I didn't really mean what did you do in life to deserve staying home--I don't really think of it in those terms, though if we were judged by hardships I am sure you deserve to stay home. I guess I think of education as a gift, and I want to give back to society by using that gift (that sounds pompous, and I don't mean it that way, but my area of research is a relatively new one so my research is some of the first to be published). If I can leave a legacy by making a contribution in my field of research, that will make me feel good. Both of my parents worked in my field so I guess they always stressed how important what I do is, so that's another part of it for me. Of course my work and research is in addition to all of the other aspects of my life and roles I play.
I'm sure they are glad that you have someone to take care of you as you took care of them. I think my parents would probably rather I had a husband with more money too, even if I chose to work. In the end I think all parents probably want us to have as few worries as possible.
