Re: Work or Stay Home
I think once we have children I would stay home for a little while but I would return to work shortly after having a baby. I worked very hard in school to get where I am and I love what I do. Besides, as a teacher, I have plenty of vacation time to spend with my children. I think I would go nuts if I was home alone for too long.

Re: Work or Stay Home
I absolutely would stay home to raise my children if we could afford it! No question about it!
However, when the youngest one was off to school to school, I would definitely get at least a part-time job though, I would go crazy just sitting home and watching Oprah or something....

Re: Work or Stay Home
We decided together that I would stay home.. For me, it wasn't worth the money that we would be spending on daycare/nanny for me to work. I already had taken a paycut when I had gotten a jo on Long Island from NYC...
In my situation I was laid off a month before I became pregnant, so I was home my entire pregnancy. I was very happy the 1st trimester because I was so sick but after that I was bored... However, since I have been home with my son, I have to say I am so busy with him and keeping myself occupied.. You don't realize how mucch work it is to stay home with a child..
If you could stay home and choose not to before you have the baby, you might change your mind once the baby is born. I have seen it happen to many of my friends who have had fantastic careers... Everything changes once the little one arrives....

Re: Work or Stay Home
I had the opportunity to not work for about a year and while it seems like it would be fantastic to not have to go to work it was, after some time, very boring. I actually started to feel like I wasn't a productive member of society and that literally started to bring me down! I felt like sort of a loser. Money wasn't the problem, it was just that I didn't feel productive.
So I guess if I could do it again, I would, but it would be different. I'd do things I like to do. Maybe volunteer or work part-time for a not for profit org. or somewhere that I wouldn't have to work a full 40 hour week but would feel like I was still a contributing member of society. Maybe I'd go back to school for something fun like cooking or interior design and then start my own business... Hmmmm the possibilities are endless!
Of course if it were to be a SAHM, I'd do it in less than two shakes of a lambs tail.

Of course, if we could afford it. I do the bills and KNOW that we can not afford to have either of us quit our jobs though.

Re: Work or Stay Home
I don't think I could stay home for long...I was home for a month when we relocated and went absolutely nuts!
As of now DH works from home, so if he continues to do that after we have kids then I wouldn't have to leave my job

Re: Work or Stay Home
If we could afford it and had babies or toddlers, yes I would be a stay at home mom until the kids were in school.
I could not be a stay at home wife. Although I do work from home often, I have a salary coming in and appointments all over the NYC Metro area so I get to interact with adults on a regular basis.
I think I'd go crazy just staying at home all day waiting for the kids to come home especially since DH and my friends would all be at work. I'd probably take on a part-time job or volunteer even if we had enough income and savings for me to stay at home forever.

Re: Work or Stay Home
Maybe - I'd like to be a SAHM until my kids are in school and then go back to work. I doubt that will happen though. Even if we can swing it, I think I would feel guilty and I am not sure if I like the idea of having an "allowance" per se. I like having my own money and being able to spend it guilt free.
I definitely would not be a SAHW. I would go crazy, although I do have dreams of quitting, getting a personal trainer and going to the gym for hours a day to get a kick a$$ body.

Re: Work or Stay Home
If we could afford it, I'd consider it. But, like others said, I'd have a problem completely depending on DH for any money I would need. Not like it's even an option, but if the opportunity came up, I'd have to make sure that I'd have full access to funds so I never have to ask for it; that, I could never do.

Re: Work or Stay Home
I like the balance between home and work.
I live about 5 minutes from my job and I am home by three thirty. I work in a school so I have vacations and holidays.
It also gets me up and going for the day and it keeps my toddler in a routine. I feel more tired when I stay home.
To me my job feels like a part time job because I am home so early. I admire the moms who work longer hours.

Re: Work or Stay Home
Depending on how much $$ he was making I would- I like cooking and cleaning and taking care of things for my DH. I wish I had more time to do those types of things. We also like our current lifestyle. I work very hard now and have a great job, unfortunately I know that when I have children I will have to make a change as my job environment isn't condusive to the conditions I want my child to grow up (tons of traveling). I will not feel guilty staying home, getting manis & pedis, going to the gym, etc. if we agree it's OK!

Yes and I did just that.
Just adding to my original post b/c I thought this was only regarding SAHMs.
I was a Stay at Home Girlfriend when we were dating/living together. We both decided that it was best if I was home to take care of things while he traveled, plus I didn't have to worry about getting time off when we traveled.

Re: Work or Stay Home
It's a decision we'd make together - DH would certainly not be telling me what I could do.
I love my job. I'll have 4 months of maternity leave and a generous academic calendar with plenty of days off. While I'm not a mom yet, I can't imagine my leaving my job.

That was a decision we came to together. We both decided for me to leave my job as a teacher to become a SAHM. I have been a SAHM for 5 years now and no regrets whatsoever!! Best decision of my life.

Re: Work or Stay Home
Dh would like for me to quit my job now because he would like for me to focus more on the house that we are going to build this year but I told him I would quit whenever I get pregnant.

Re: Work or Stay Home
I did it, I quit my job and DH said it was fine not to go back to work. I think its great for the obvious reasons, clean house, dinner. But it also STINKS I have cut my spending SO much (which is good for DH) but I also have to be more concious (sp) of what I do. It has its ups and downs. I hostess 2 nights a week just for "me" time.

I was always told... "may you have your degrees and never have to use it...."
I just think that's a weird statement for professors (or anyone really, unless the goal was just to get an MRS degree and not work) to say. I am working on my dissertation for my doctorate, and all we ever talk about is "how are you going to contribute to society? how is your research going to change your field of expertise? how can you get published as much as possible so that others may benefit from your research?" No professor ever said to me "I hope you never have to use what you are sitting here learning." I agree that education is never a waste regardless of whether it is applicable to a job, but I just cannot imagine anyone saying I hope you never have to use it.
