Re: Working Moms: Did you take any unpaid time off on top of your paid leave?

Yes, I got paid for the first 10 weeks, then I had to take whatever PTO I accrued (which was only 5 days since I had a couple carryover from last year, and I went out at the end of January). So in total I got 11 fully paid weeks, all the rest until I go back is unpaid (April 1st- June 30th.. I go back July 1st)

Re: Working Moms: Did you take any unpaid time off on top of your paid leave?

I get six weeks paid (4 extended sick and 2 vacation) then 2 weeks disability because I had a c-section. The rest is unpaid but I spoke to my boss and I am going to work from home during the rest of my leave. My total leave will be about 22 weeks. April 20th to after Labor Day. When I go back I am going back 3 days in Sept and then 4 in Oct and work from home the other day.

6 months sounds lovely. I wonder if I could take the rest of the summer off. I'm afraid to ask though. No one else at my company takes more than the paid leave. I had asked HR and said it's up to my boss but nit doesn't seem like other females have done that in the past. Sigh.

In my job we are only guaranteed 4 weeks before the due date and 6-8 weeks after depending on your delivery. The extended unpaid time is also up to the supervisor but everyone takes it. I don't think there has ever been a supervisor in my department that has said no. It doesn't hurt to ask. Good Luck!!!

I took about 4.5 months off and only got paid for 6 weeks. I think if you can afford the additional time take it. I loved every minute I was home with DS

Re: Working Moms: Did you take any unpaid time off on top of your paid leave?

I had to take some of my leave unpaid b/c I was not at my company for a year yet and was not entitled to the full maternity benefits.

I took 10 months off and only used about 3 weeks of my sick time. We were living in an apartment and didn't have to worry about a mortgage payment. Now that we own a home, I think I'll only be able to take off about 3 months with the next baby. (Not that I'm preggo now)

Re: Working Moms: Did you take any unpaid time off on top of your paid leave?

No, but I'm a teacher and Lily timed it all perfectly so my 6 weeks would feed into the summer months, so I had all of June, July and August off after she was born.
Of course, I also work in a district where we have unlimited sick time, so I was able to take off for all of May with a doctor's note before she was born. Chat Icon

I took 9 months off, 4 were unpaid. It was the most I could take off where they would still hold my old position and it would not effect my service date, etc.

Re: Working Moms: Did you take any unpaid time off on top of your paid leave?

I stopped working at 29 weeks and didn't go back until DS was 3 months old (delivered at 39 weeks). I can take a max of 9 months off which I might do when I have #2, or I might not go back at all depending on how things go.

My situation was a little different.

I was planning on taking 6 weeks, but I lost my job when was I was 38 weeks pregnant. I was on unemployement until DS was 5 months old, then I went back to work.
