Would this bother you?
Today at the Moving Up Day for our fifth graders, the prinicpal gave a farewell speech.... he mentioned ALL the fifth grade general ed. teachers, but not me. I teach a self-contained/some inclusion (i stay with them) class. So my kids are on a general ed. roster, but i teach them, if that makes sense. I am with them ALL day, I am not a special ed. teacher with other classes or students.
It really hurt my feelings. I work my *** off with those kids. granted, i onlyl have 7 students, but they are the most impaired students on the grade level. in addition I did a LOT of work for the moving up day program itself.
Would this bother you? I felt really hurt. I am starting to get used to not getting a 5th grade t-shirt like all the other teachers from the PTA, or not being included in the yearbook (all the other teachers get their picture in as well as writing a message to the kids...) but to not be acknowledged in front of ALL the parents, faculty and 5th graders? This really bothered me.

Re: Would this bother you?
yes I would feel hurt too is there a reason why you dont get the t-shirt or arent included in other things (yearbook, etc)?
Im assuming youre fifth grade also, right?

yes, i am fifth grade. my kids are fifth graders. i don't know why i am not included in those things, i really don't. My kids are included in a general ed. classroom for part of the day (I am always with them) so maybe they just think of the general ed. teacher i work with because that's where the kids are listed in terms of a roster? (i.e. my kids are on a general ed. roster in terms of class list, attendance, etc.) Also, with many parents in my district, being "special ed." is a 'stigma' and so i think it's easier for them to avoid it, if that makes sense.

Re: Would this bother you?
I can't believe that the principal didn't acknowledge you. You have every right to feel that way.
Maybe it was accidental...I'm sorry this happened to you.

Re: Would this bother you?
I am so sorry that you are being treated this way. We have the same position...I am also a fifth grade self-contained teacher! My school is incredibly inclusive because we have 4 self-contained classes, including 2 6:1:2 classes, and the school is used to a large population of students with special needs. I was in the yearbook with my message for my kids, I was acknowledged at graduation, I got a t-shirt for Olympics, etc. Even our TAs got a shout-out at graduation and in the program.
You have absolutely every right to feel offended. I am upset for you! I know how hard it is to teach the most impaired students in the building and I know how much work you must put into each child in your class. From your message, it seems as if the culture of your school is not too "special ed friendly." Is this correct? If so, is it possible to hook-up with SEPTA in your building to build more of a "special ed presence"? Just some thoughts...I'm not sure what else to say. I'm just so sorry that you were not acknowledged for all the hard work I'm sure you put into your kids each and every day.

That's really sad then like a PP mentioned, maybe speak to SEPTA about the special ed population being included more.
you absolutely deserve to be acknowledged

Thanks....
I have to say i always felt supported by the other teachers in the building. We have a large special ed. team: a self-contained k-1 class, a 2-3 class and i have a counterpart on 4th grade. we have 3 full-time speech therapists, a full-time OT, a part-time PT, 4 full-time resource room teachers and 4 special ed. TAs. Everyone, including general ed. teachers have been so supportive and works well together. this is why i was so hurt. granted, it was an interim principal, but still! he gave me tenure this year so clearly he knows what i do. and the only reason i and other special educators, TAs and classroom aides were included on the program was because I created it! the principal had none of us on his initial draft.
you're right though, maybe i should get more involved in SEPTA. however, we are a "very high perfoming district" and i think most parents forget about our kids with needs. I get asked at every single annual review why is my child in special ed.? when will they get "out" of it? sometimes i just feel .

Re: Would this bother you?
It's a shame to say but if there is that much special education presence in your school and the teachers work so nicely together, it sounds like it might be your principal that's out of the loop. Hopefully when you get a new principal he/she will be more inclusive of everyone, both students AND teachers. I also work for a "very high performing district"! I wonder if we work in the same town.

Yes that stinks. You deserve as much recognition as any other teacher in that school.

Re: Would this bother you?
I would def be hurt, and I would say something about the t-shirt and pics. If I was a student it would bother me that my teacher wasn't wearing a t-shirt when all the other 5th grade teachers were.....it kind of ostracizes the kids too (more than they already are)

Re: Would this bother you?
That is not ok at all. I would've been very upset. By leaving you out, it hurts you and your students. I totally know how you are coming from. I used to teach self contained and we were constantly getting left out. I once sat in a meeting with my principal and he talked about the 5 4th grade teachers, I was number 6!
There is such an issue in schools with special ed being left out and it is not ok. I am sorry this happened to you. I would have felt the same way. The other stuff, like being left out of the yearbook and not getting a t shirt is really wrong as well. It is unprofessional to you and it sends a terrible message to your kids, like their teacher is not as important, therefore they are not as important.

This is so completely wrong, and I'm so sorry it happened to you... I'm just hoping things will change drastically with a new principal (if this was who I think it was, it doesn't entirely surprise me, to be honest...)
