I'd have absolutely no problems with consolidation of school districts. I think its what LI needs.

We don't have children. I could care less what the school district is like.

I wish there was a tax break for people like us. I pay property taxes, why should I pay for other people's children's education?

lol, That's how I feel, they should have a different way of taxing people with no children in the school district.

I think I'm going to start showing up at the school to take gym or join the drama club.

I think the schools should be consolidated. Yes in the short run it might upset people who bought into a specific community, but in the long run, I believe education overall will get better, resources are better allocated and eventually taxes will go down. I think it's totally unfair that the "good " districts only allow those who could afford it to live there and those who cant, well screw you and your child for not being financially able.

I'm not a believer that a school district determines a child's success. I'm also not into labeling districts as good just because the slanted scoring system & newsday said so.
I am a believer that we NEED to consolidate the LI districts, maybe into 3 or 4 in Nassau & 6 or 7 in Suffolk. I think it would serve ALL of our children well. The majority of kids on LI are attending schools that are way too homogeneous for me.
We might have an african American president, my kids should certainly have friends that aren't all white.

In states where the school districts are more consolidated than ours, there is still segregation, often worse than there is here. I went to one of Long Island's top rated districts and my school was not "lilly white." I'm not one to buy into test scores either but I want to be in a district where the other parents are as concerned about education as I am. That is why I bought into a school district that is highly rated.

I don't know- I do get that taxes are absurd and that lots of districts are top-heavy with highly paid administrators.

I teach in NYC and I think one of our many problems is that even broken down by region/district, that they are still too big. So I think consolidation might not be the best educational move.

Also, as someone who works in a school, I feel like I see a lot of waste. Schools could probably save a lot of money by making smaller cuts. Those budgets need an overhaul.

Re: Would you be willing to give up your school district for lower taxes?

No. I bought my house in this town in large part b/c of the school district. The school district I live in has a solid reputation and the taxes are reasonable for Nassau county. The districts to the west and north are not places I'd want to send my kids, even if it meant lower taxes.

absolutely not. i bought into my district for a reason.

i would, however, be strongly in favor of school districts consolidating resources, health insurance packages and bids. that would lower taxes due to stronger bargaining power.

You took the words righ out of my mouth - I agree 100%
