Would you buy a new car just because yours is old?
my car is 10 yrs old with almost 111K miles on it. but it runs REALLY well, has no dents, no rust, brand new tires and just had a major tune up on it less than 1 yr ago (at 100K miles).
I know I probably *should* buy a new car. but now I am wondering - why? do I need it? no
what would you do?

Probably not, unless I started to dump a lot of money into maintenance. If it runs great and there are no problems, it always good not to have a car payment. (and this comes from someone who gets a new car every 2 years, or less).

If htere are no problemsw I wouildn't, but once things start breaking down, I would get a new one rather than repair it. My car is 7 years old and I wish I had traded it in instead of spending thousands on it last year.

I have a '99 Civic, and have had no problems with it, but I am going to trade it in soon because I want to get rid of it before I start having problems with it...I need a reliable car, and don't want to take the chance that it will start dying on me soon.

aside from regular maintenance, I really have not put a lot of money into this car. the power window broke 2x, but that's about it for the non-regular maintenance repairs.

OMG! What kind of car is it.
I can't even begin to tell you how much $$$ I've put into this car and it only has 64K miles.
Did you change your timing belt?

Re: Would you buy a new car just because yours is old?
is it the smartest thing to do ? probably not
would it do it? yes i have a 00 solara with 86k miles but im dying for a new car i was going to lease a new lexus this past summer but i was so busy and never did
now im just waiting for it to be summer again to get a car but most importantly i will be able to start with monthy payments again
if you can deal with the monthly payments, why not?

This is how i feel about my 99 Sentra. i LOVE not having a car payment though and she is still reliable (knock on wood) so i'm trying to hold out for as long as possible. I look at new cars (online) all the time, but i get buyers remorse just thinking about it. I think i'll probably hold onto it until we have a kid- then i'll probably feel more urgency to have a safe, dependable car. I'm rambling- the point is- i feel the same way you do

nope- until i got married like 4 years ago I had a 1989 volvo sedan w/ a lot more miles than yours. our 99 lexus has 195,000 miles on it and it's still going.

I have a '98 Grand Prix. so much for American cars not being reliable

Re: Would you buy a new car just because yours is old?
KEEP YOUR CAR
I had a 93 Mazda MX3 from April 96 to April 05. Only reason I gave it up was it need a repair that outweighed a deposit on a newer car.
I'd still be driving it if I could. It had over 130K miles on it and drove like a dream! No car payment and lower insurance, lower registration was GREAT!
I miss my car.

Re: Would you buy a new car just because yours is old?
here is what I would have to do to my car (according to DH) should I decide to keep it...
1. complete brake system overhaul (rotors, brake pump and new brake fluids) 2. complete suspension overhaul including struts, shocks and springs 3. new timing belt 4. have exhaust system checked

Re: Would you buy a new car just because yours is old?
No way....I have a 2000 Elantra with 145K and it runs great. I've changed the timing belt and alternator. That's it. Sure, it would be nice to have a new car, and we can afford one, but I just don't want a car payment. I'd rather save my money to get things for our house that we need. I'll keep the car until it dies, then get another one....hopefully not for a long time.

Re: Would you buy a new car just because yours is old?
Nope! If the car you have currently runs well and there's nothing out on the market that you absolutely love and can afford, stick with what you've got
I have a 97 Expedition with over 152K miles on it and to be honest, we don't have any intention of getting rid of it any time soon.

Re: Would you buy a new car just because yours is old?
Nope - I would hold out if I was you. If the car runs good and you have no problems with it then why bother. Also I agree not having a car payment is a great thing.
I have an 05 Subaru legacy that is paid off and I love the fact that I dont have a payment to pay each month. I would love to trade it in and get a small SUV but I wont.
We just bought an 07 Mitsu Endeavor, so we have a payment there but its not so bad each month.
