Re: Would you buy a new car just because yours is old?
If the car is running great and looks great, I woudn't change!! Why waste the money for the risk of another vehicle that isn't as reliable? You probably have something else you could spend $400 a month on.

Re: Would you buy a new car just because yours is old?
it depends on how safe the car is. there are new innovations in new cars that make the cars more efficient, more technologic advances such as GPS and blue tooth and onstar. Gas mileage is a factor as well. I think our next car will be a green car. Engines now are gentler to the environment, even SUVs and trucks..new emission standards have been put in place and more to come as more 08 and 09 models come out. Does the car have ABS brakes, traction control, air bags? Newer cars now have air bags in places that not only can save your life, but can prevent major injury to you and your passengers. New cars have latch systems for car seats which are now standard.
Although this can happen with a new car, older cars to have a worse repair record. I wouldn't want to be stuck somewhere broken down.
I'm a car person and I appreciate new technology. Would I like to have no car payment? Yep, wouldn't anyone? It really depends on how you feel about having a new car. If you really want one, it's like anything else you really want and have to spend money on. Can you afford to have a new car? That's really a good question.
If you want a new car, can afford a new car and have one in mind that you like then pull the trigger. Otherwise drive your car until it croaks or until the desire for a new one outweighs the practical aspect of having no car payment.

Re: Would you buy a new car just because yours is old?
no... We have a 99 Honda CRV and enjoy not having a car note. He got it in 2001 and it only had 13K miles on it. It has 92K miles on it now.
Before this car DH had a Nissan Mazima and it needed 3K worth of work and it was only worth 5K. He traded it in to CarMax and they gave him 5K. He used that trade-in as down payment on the CRV. He's said that he would still be driving it if it didnt need so much work.

I love having a new car but hate having car payments. If you can get away with your old car then I would do it.

Re: Would you buy a new car just because yours is old?
I wouldn't buy a new car. I drove a 1990 Mazda from about 1996-2002 or somewhere in there. Had a few minor problems which could be fixed. Then I drove a 1999 Saturn from '02 or '03 (I forget) until this past September..LOVE the Saturn. No car payments was great!
DH drives and '01 Toyota Corolla with like 125K miles on it. Its running pretty well and he's still holding onto it.
I got a new car (Hundyai santa fe) Only because we now have DS.

Re: Would you buy a new car just because yours is old?
I drive a 1995 Honda Accord. I am dying for a new car but mine is still running well. We've had to put $$$ into it, most recently for a new radiator, but nothing that was so much that it would be equal to downpayment on a new car. Right now, it is heating up a little bit and according to our mechanic, it is either the water pump or a head gasket. Obviously if it's a head gasket, we will be moving on to a new car.
So basically, if your car is still running well and is reliable, which it sounds like it is, I would keep it until you really need a new one.

Re: Would you buy a new car just because yours is old?
I make it a personal mission to drive my cars until they are dead. I drive a 2000 Dodge neon with 156,000 miles. My DH's work truck is a 2002 dodge ram with 172,000 miles.
I despise car payments. I'm planning on buying a toyota prius in the very near future. I grew up in "the car business" & cars mean nothing to me, they don't turn me on in anyway. They are just a way to get me around hopefully with the best fuel ecomony possible.

Re: Would you buy a new car just because yours is old?
I would LOL life is too short - I would want a nice, new car after driving the same one for so many years. I would want NICE new features that cars have nowadays like GPS, heated seats, great leather, etc. Esp b/c you can get a car with all of that for pretty reasonable considering all that is in it. I dunno - I'm always the type to say "ehh, $crew it! treat yourself!"
You haven't had payments in 5 1/2 years so I would crunch some numbers and see if you can afford a new car - if so, which kind? What is your budget? And then shop away!
A few weeks ago a friend and I looked at the Nissan Rogue - now, my car is not up on its lease for another year - but what a nice car for the money! You can get one with leather, heated seats, moonroof and GPS built in for like $21-$22 thou (sticker: $24 thou) but the sales guy told me what they give off on the sticker! What a great price!
Well, do whatever you feel most comfortable with - the "right thing to do" would be to keep your car until you have probs with it but you know what? I feel like if I work and I want something - I should do it.

"Does the car have ABS brakes, traction control, air bags?" yes, yes and yes.
It doesn't have side airbags, but it has 2 in the front of the car. while I appreciate new technology, I feel like buying a new car right now just b/c we can afford it and just b/c mine is 10 yrs old is wasteful. my car also gets really good gas mileage, especially considering that it has a 3.8 liter V6. I get about 30-31 MPG on the highway.
My mom just bought a new Camry last week and I drove it yesterday, I am in love! and I def think that will be my next car. but maybe I'll just wait a little longer.

Re: Would you buy a new car just because yours is old?
I wouldn't take on that extra expense unless the car I was currently driving wasnt dependable. I had a 2001 Kia Rio that I got brand new and used for college and working. I didn't put a ton of money into it, but it did need a decent amount of work. When I got my job it turned out to be a pretty decent commute - almost an hour each way - so DH and I thought seriously about getting a new car b/c the Rio wouldn't have been able to take the commute and having a safe and dependable car was important, plus I just got a good job so I could contribute. That's how we decided - HTH!

Re: Would you buy a new car just because yours is old?
I would buy a new car every 2 years if I could!!
Having said that - my husband has a lot more common sense than I do - and some nonsense too.
As long as the car is safe, clean and running well... I don't see any reason at all to replace it! Save your money until you really need it.

Re: Would you buy a new car just because yours is old?
No way. My car (Honda Civic EX) is 10 years old with less than 65k miles on it. The only reason we're going to start shopping for a new one for me is b/c I'm pregnant and could use more room.

Re: Would you buy a new car just because yours is old?
I had a Celica for 14 years...it had 130K miles on it...I put almost no work into the car except general maintenance.
Then the axle went, the exhaust got loud and I started to worry. I sold it for $1300 and bought my truck.
I paid that car off in three years and got 11 $$$$ free years out of it...so I say, until it starts to have serious mechanical issues keep it as long as you can.
Cars are way more expensive now that they were ten years ago...I had to take a five year loan on my truck and hate that I won't get those $$$ free years out of it.

If you don't NEED one then save yourself the car payment.
eta: I used to have a car with no payments, and I got a new car, just to get one...and even though I get a new car every 3 yrs (I lease) I sometimes regret getting rid of my 1st car...yeah it was nothing special...but it was payment free

Absolutely not. I had "Blanche", my 1991 Chevy Lumina for 16 years and would still have her if she hadn't, literally, broken in two. I loved that car. I hate having to pay on a car loan.

Re: Would you buy a new car just because yours is old?
No. We have two cars and one is owned outright. its a 99 Acura and has no mechanical issues. I would not want to add another 400-500 car payment into the monthly budget just cause its old.

that's pretty much how I feel about it. I work hard and I like to have new cars every few years. I save money in other ways to justify it.
Dina, check out the new technology in safety in the new cars. It will make you want a new one and make you want to get rid of yours fast.
Also your gas mileage will only be that high when you are going on long hauls wiith no stop and go. If you drive stop and go a lot then your gas mileage will go way down.
There's a lot to be said for efficiency, safety and creature comforts in a new car.
Glad you liked the Camry. It's such a great car for a reasonable amount of money. That car could last you another 10 years at least!
Like I said, I'm a car person. I like gadgets and new technology. It's important to me. I love driving my new Camry.

I wouldn't buy a new one just because it's old. As long as the car is treating me and my pocketbook well, I'm keeping it. You are lucky if you have a gem like that.
I would put an amount equivalent to a car payment away into savings for when you need to get a new car.

not having a car payment in 5.5 yrs ROCKS!
This is what has me sticking with my 01 Jeep Cherokee that has 105K miles ...

Re: Would you buy a new car just because yours is old?
Nope. I have a '93 Mazda Protege. It's my first car. Would I like a shiny new car? Yes, but I don't want or need the payments. My car only has 45,000 miles & in the last 3.5 years, I've put less than $500 in maintenance. I repaired the breaks, got a new alternator & a battery. I know I will need a new car eventually, but for now, I love my car.

You beat me to pointing out the safety portion of new cars. Our cars are 5 and 7 years, and have been pretty much repair-free, but I really wish we had more airbags, better traction control, and some of the other new safety features available. Yes, it's nice not having a monthly bill, but it's also nice knowing that you have the latest technology available to protect you and your family. It's a constant tug-of-war.
