The airbags are big..I have airbags at the point where my knees would plow into the dash. Also the engine slides under the car to prevent having it come at you through the dash. I've seen that technology in the higher end cars but only recently in the mid priced cars..maybe the last 3-4 years.
Bells and whistles too like radio and temp controls on the steering wheel so I don't have to look down. I call them bells and whistles but it's very safe.

Re: Would you buy a new car just because yours is old?
I would like to get a new car. I'm driving a 99 Mazda 626 with 134K miles on it. I drive 1K miles a month for work only.
For the past month, I've had a sometimes blinking sometimes steady check engine light. I'm going to go get it checked out soon, and I need to come up with that figure where fixing it is too much. I hate driving now and having the feeling of 'it's going to die at any moment'. But then again people drive their cars for many more years than mine, and with many more miles. It's a crapshoot.
I go back and forth on getting a car.. right now I'm stashing all of the 'extra' cash we have (double a car payment a month at least) so I can use that for the downpayment when the time really comes.
