would you care if a relative that you do not see often has a kid with the same first name?
DH and I did not tell anyone our name choices. Because of this, there was no one who could tell us that a relative has a child with the same name. (I'm not saying whose relative b/c of the family lurkers). This is a relative that we are not close with by any means and that is why we forgot that they have a kid with this name. However, we are close with other family that sees them a lot and might feel offended (or maybe they would be flattered???). I am a bit disappointed to find this out. I do not want to reveal the name to family just because of this. Can we just go on with the name choice? I keep imagining family hearing the name for the first time and saying , "oh, but that is so and so's kid." That part makes me sad. FYI, the other kid has a different last name than ours.

my sis's son and my cousin's son have the same first name, and they are best friends who see each other often.. I dont see anything wrong with it.

We would definitely not care, I think you should name your baby any name you want. Esp. in this situation, it is not someone you see often...

I wouldn't care, especailly since you don't see them all the time. If you love the name, go for it!
I have a very large family and there are a number of cousins with the same name. No one in the family made an issue out of it.

I care.
I have the same situation. There is a name I LOVE that I wanted to use as a middle name... be we aren't, because they have a kid named that way.
Ours is Sister-in-Law's husband's brother named their kid that name, and we won't name ours because of it

i wouldn't care if it was one i didnt see often (regardless of whether other family members see them). if it was one of my cousin's who i see all the time, i probably wouldn't.

My DS has the same name (spelling and all) as my DH's cousins son, who we see maybe 1-2 times a year at most. I didn't even give it a 2nd though b/c we have loved that name since we 1st met and were discussing having children.

I would care if I were close to the family of the kid with the same name. However, in the situation you described, it would not bother me.

It is the same thing for my DD DH has a cousin with the same first and last name (middle name is different) I have been with DH for over 5 years - I have seen her about 3 times Anywho - she is such a sweetie that she actually wrote me a card when we first had DD telling me that she is so excited that they share the same first name.
Yes - we did her that we already have an Ali - but you know what - we loved the name and that is what we wanted - so we went for it

Re: would you care if a relative that you do not see often has a kid with the same first name?
I think it depends on the situation. I personally wouldn't care if the kids were farther apart in age (say one was 6 or 7 and the other was for the baby) but if there was another newborn with the same name I would think twice. It also depends on the family and culture I guess. DH is Catholic and Italian/Irish, so everyone in his family is Frank, Michael, Robert, Thomas, James, etc. He has no problem with that and thikns that But in my family, we all have unique names and have more of a tendency to try not to repeat a name someone else in the family has.

Re: would you care if a relative that you do not see often has a kid with the same first name?
Depends on the person...for instance we liked a name which is DH's cousin's childs name. Although we probably only see them once a year, and dont talk to them in between, DH wasnt comfortable naming our child that. I think for him coming from a small family he doesnt feel its right. However one of our girls names is my cousin's daughter, I only see them for family events and I have a very large family so I have no problem with it.
If you do name the child the name, you will most certainly get "oh just like so and so's child" but after a short time, no one will notice. I know I have cousins who have the same names as either of my brothers and my parents didnt mind, so in the end I say do what you want to!

My dh would care. I wouldn't. We loved the name connor and his step-sister used it. I have never even met th girl because they can't stand eachother but he refused to even consider the name after we found out she used it. Good thing we are having a

Re: would you care if a relative that you do not see often has a kid with the same first name?
We are in the same situation. DH's cousin had a baby girl a little over a year ago and used my favorite name that I have always wanted to use if we have a girl. We have not seen them since our wedding in 2004 and am not sure when we will see them again. We e-mail once in a while to catch up on the baby. DH is not comfortable using the name since it is his aunt's granddaughter that has the name and he is super close with his aunt. He feels it will be too confusing with his aunt and his parents. I am ok with still using the name.

Re: would you care if a relative that you do not see often has a kid with the same first name?
We had this happen recently with our son's name. The person called me to ask, although I'm sure they would have chosen it anyway. She didn't want me to hear it through the grapevine.
I guess it's no big deal but I'm a little annoyed. The whole reason we chose the name was because we didn't want to be surrounded by that name. Everywhere we go - there is the name.
