seriously, it's what ever his heart desires.... but even if his chosen career does not require higher ed., we WILL encourage him to at least get a BS at a university. We believe it is a good experience and shapes a person's perspective on life.

Since I'm in the IT field, I honestly believe that computers will be a required in almost every field in another 15-20 years. I would never push DC to do exactly what I do, or even stay with computers, but I do want to teach them a lot about computers, just as a leg-up in any field they choose.

DH and I are in the same business, but went different routes. We have already established that our son will be DISCOURAGED from becoming a meteorologist. It is a thankless job where you make NO money. It's frustrating and everybody feels the need to ask you all the time how the weather will be. I am sure DH would be thrilled (he owns his own construction business), however, I'd like to see my DS go on to at least get his college degree so he has something to possibly fall back on. I see the negatives of being self-employed on an all-too-often basis. DH dropped out of college at the community-college level one class shy and it's been his biggest regret. He feels "stuck" now and like it's too late for him to go back. (He works a gazillion hours a week to keep his business going and after my shelling out thousands towards my career path, can't justify another degree right now). If my child wanted to pursue social work, I would support him but also be honest about the pros/cons of the profession since I am obviously a little bias.
