Re: Would you fly to Europe (or any other 7 hour flight destination) the same day dc got a vaccination?
With DS, he had the "standard" reaction to the MMR which was a high fever and rash 7-10 days later. He actually spiked a fever on the 9th day and it lasted 2 1/2 days. I forget exactly but I think it went up to 104 or so. That would be of more concern to me than flying the day of. A few hours after this particular shot he was his normal self, it was the week and a half later, that would be concern for Luce if you're still in Spain and that happens then.

we are toying with the idea of heading to Milan after. dh actually mapped out an awesome drive but not sure yet.
that would put us smack into the time frame though.
yeah, it's not happening.
now I may as well delay til before we go to Nicaragua. he is definitely getting the shot before that trip.

Re: Would you fly to Europe (or any other 7 hour flight destination) the same day dc got a vaccination?
no way!!!!!! esp. with MMR. DD1 just got it at 2 y.o. The reaction doesn't really show until 7-9 days later. She had a fever for 2 days, a rash for 3 days, and was majorly cranky for 5 days.

Re: Would you fly to Europe (or any other 7 hour flight destination) the same day dc got a vaccination?
Nope! And I did actually face something similar. DD went for her 9 mth check up the day we were leaving for a cruise to Fl, MExico and Belize. We told the dr for this reason, we didnt want to give her any shots she hadn't had yet, and he completely agreed. He said to call when we were back from vacation and settled in and he would make an appmt just for the shots.

Chels never thankfully had a reaction to most shots, but to air on the side of caution I would make his visit after you get back! You never know, each shot can have a different reaction!

No. We rescheduled an dr's appt when DS was scheduled for a vaccination until after our trip upstate...just a couple hours away. Definitely reschedule.

Re: Would you fly to Europe (or any other 7 hour flight destination) the same day dc got a vaccination?
DS didn't have any reaction, but I wouldn't want to take the chance. It's pretty common for children to have some type of reaction to the MMR. I'd reschedule the appointment.

No. I would wait 2 weeks to wait for possible reactions.

Get the shot later. You never know how they are going to react to a vaccine and you don't want to be stuck on a plane with a sick baby!

I'd wait.
7 hour on a plane will be enough of a challenge.
Why throw in the possibilty of a cranky, irritated baby ?
He might have no reaction, but you never know. Not worth the chance IMO
I know!!! one side of my brain is saying this.
the other side is saying "think of all the sniffling, sneezing, disease carrying people that will be breathing in the same air for 7 hours"
that side is scarier.
I'm no scientist, but I would assume the shot takes a day or two to become fully effective...no?
Usually takes about 2-4 weeks for it to start taking effect.

No - but I would not delay the shot until after Europe, I would make sure you do it before.
We brought Jack to Italy when he was 13 months and my ped made sure that he had the MMR beforehand.

edited - I would get it done eariler because the desire to travel is the reason I get the shots in the first place, so that they have some level of immunization built up.
see, this is my thinking....
I am pretty sure they told me MMR at 12 months.
not sure they would give it to him a week before (not sure I want them to) and I can't change the date of the wedding, even as persuasive as I can be
oh fiddlesticks.
Jess, call your ped and talk to them. The reaction usually falls within 7-15 days so you want him to have the shot about two weeks prior to leaving.
I WOULD NOT go to Spain without him getting the MMR

yeah, I agree with getting the shot before going to Europe, but I'm not sure you can get it before 12 months.

ITA with Diana... get it a few weeks before. My ped also said to look for a reaction 10 days later.

Re: Would you fly to Europe (or any other 7 hour flight destination) the same day dc got a vaccination?
No I wouldn't.
I would want to be close to my ped for a few days after in case DD has a harsh reaction.
I think with MMR reactions can take up to 2 weeks to show up - so in that case if I was in your situation I would delay the vaccination until the 15 month appt.
ETA: reading the posts above, yeah it makes sense to get vaccinated before, not after.

Re: Would you fly to Europe (or any other 7 hour flight destination) the same day dc got a vaccination?
For the MMR my answer is different than b/c of other shots. My DS always reacts to shots so,no, I would never fly with him within a week of the shot. BUT, for the MMR - how long will you be gone? DS started getting a terrible rash around day 5 after the shot along with a low grade fever but he was very uncomfortable from it...this lasted a few days then, a few days later (around day 10) he had a high fever for a few days and then that was it. But if you are going to be gone for less than 5 days I would say to go. My ped said the typical reaction appears around day 7 to day 10 post shot but, said it is possible (and DS was a confirmed case of this) to have a reaction as early as 3-4 days later or as late as 3-4 wks later. home this helps!

Re: Would you fly to Europe (or any other 7 hour flight destination) the same day dc got a vaccination?
Not in a million years! My DS gets cranky whenever he gets vaccines and I would not want to be in an unfamiliar environment much less on a plane fpr 7 hours with him when he's like that.
But you know your DS best and if he doesn't get cranky, he maybe ok. I have read on here though that the reaction to the MMR can be more "severe" for lack of a better word. If you are ok delaying it, I would probably delay until after the trip and after his bday just to avoid the possibility of having a reaction and it impacting the trip/bday.

Re: Would you fly to Europe (or any other 7 hour flight destination) the same day dc got a vaccination?
I would get it earlier as when we went to Spain, my Dr. wanted a few days between the vaccine and flying.
He also told us to ge the Hep A before our trip -- and we did. I would ask your ped.

Re: Would you fly to Europe (or any other 7 hour flight destination) the same day dc got a vaccination?
I would definitely speak to the ped about doing it 2-3 weeks before your trip. There is a measles scare/outbreak HERE right now - there is no way I would leave the country without vaccinating. See what the dr recommends.

No way!! However, MMR reactions don't usually happen for about a week to 21 days due to the live nature of it.
