Would you take a 3 week old to a small wedding reception?

In NJ.....can't leave her home because of BFing. Not on the bottle.

ETA......I should add that it will be at a restaurant. No DJ.

I wouldn't. But I was also one of those moms that didn't take DS to public places until he had his first set of shots. Chat Icon

Re: Would you take a 3 week old to a small wedding reception?

Lord no
And not just due to germs.
Due to the fact that she'd be screaming the whole time and ruin it for everyone.

Yes, I would personally. I took DD to a first birthday party at 4 weeks and it has about 80 people and it was a semi formal event. She woke up once to eat and slept the rest of the time, it was perfect.

No. And it has nothing to do with getting a first round of shots-- the diseases avoided by those vaccines are generally rare. The risk, as my ped explained to me, is actually from the everyday colds, flu, and other viruses that people are always walking around with (who stays home from a wedding over a cold, kwim?) What would just be a mild illness in an adult or older child could mean an ER visit and spinal tap for a newborn if they develop a fever.

Re: Would you take a 3 week old to a small wedding reception?

I definitely would. I just wouldn't let anyone else hold her or touch her. At 3 weeks old she would probably be sleeping the whole time, so you could cover the infant seat with a blanket. Or else I would hold her myself the whole time, and plan to leave early.

I had my kids out right away though, I never waited.

I did, but she was basically in the bridal suite with DH while I was in the bridal party. For the reception she was with us in the back and for the most part back in the bridal suite. It was fine.

Re: Would you take a 3 week old to a small wedding reception?

I wouldn't. Not because of illness though (but if it were cold/flu season it is something to really consider). I took my DD to DHs work BBQ at 3 weeks and she just slept in the stroller the whole time (went for about an hour). But I wouldn't bring a 3 week old to a wedding because they attract A LOT of attention and I wouldn't want to take away from the bride and grooms special day.

If it meant not being able to attend at all, and it was someone close to me, then yes. Most of the infants that age I have been around, including my own, slept the majority of the day.

Re: Would you take a 3 week old to a small wedding reception?

No. At 3 weeks old, they're very susceptible to illness (colds, flu, etc...) and I wouldn't want to risk it.

Re: Would you take a 3 week old to a small wedding reception?

I personally don't think I would take a 3 year old to a wedding. I am all about taking them out and about when they are young...my 3week old has already been on errands and to Adventureland but a wedding is just different IMO.

If she is exclusively BFing...here are some things I'd consider.

Pumping and allowing whoever will be babysitting her to feed her breastmilk in a bottle --- by 3 weeks her latch should be pretty well developed and the baby will probably be OK getting milk in a bottle for a few feedings.

Seeing if someone can watch the baby close by to the venue so she can leave a few times during the event to feed the baby and return to the wedding.

I am just thinking about how LOUD a wedding can be with the DJ/Music, and I don't think it would be appropriate to bring such a young baby!

Because my DD did NOT sleep most of the day.
In fact, she rarely slept.
A wedding at that age would have been a disaster- with her screaming and fussing and crying the whole time.
In fact, the supermarket or BRU was hard to do.
I will never forget one time my dad tried to take her for a walk in the snap n go...he ended up turning around and coming back after a few blocks because her screams were that bad....I heard them from down the block in fact...

I guess I just got VERY unlucky when it came to newborns!

Re: Would you take a 3 week old to a small wedding reception?

No b/c I don't want 500 people breathing on them ! - Also, bringing a newborn baby anywhere means taking a considerable amount of attention away from the event - and I wouldn't do that to a bride, or whomever the event was for

NO WAY!
My ped told us that up until 6 weeks old, if they develop a fever its an automatic 2 night stay in the hospital to determine if they have specific viruses.

ed: Also, I like to dance and have a few drinks at a wedding. No way I could do that with a 3 week old

I had the same kind of newborn-----extremly fussy, didnt like anything other babies like such as the carseat or stroller, never slept out of the house and just all around crazy baby. She cried non stop! I would have never been able to take her to a wedding at 3 weeks. But even if she were not as fussy i would not take her because of the risk of catching a cold being around so many people. Also wont it be obnoxiously loud?
