Re: Would you take a 3 week old to a small wedding reception?

Sorry but no. My DS had to have a spinal tap and it was horrible. A fever in a 3 week old is super serious and while chances are your baby will be fine how horrible would you feel if they weren't. I'm sure whoever it is will understand. I missed two of my closest friends weddings because they got married within a few weeks of me giving birth the first time. It sucked but what can you do?

no! between the germs and the loud music and the commute from LI to NJ, I wouldn't. plus, at 3 weeks PP, I don't even think that I'd be up to doing that kind of trip, but that's just me.

Probably not unless it was a sibling or someone I was really close to. I was so sleep deprived @ 3 weeks pp that I didn't know what planet I was on. I was also recovering from a c-section and living in sweatpants. I'm sure the bride will understand.

With my first DC, I probably would have but for #s 2 and 3, I feel like I am more protective of them and wouldn't take them.

I took DS#1 to my ILs when he was 2 days old -- almost everyone on my DH's side of the family was there and wanted to hold him. I didn't think anything of it. I

For DS#2, he was born at the peak of the swine flu worry and then I contracted it myself and couldn't be around him for 24-48hrs. I became very protective of him and didn't want him around too many people until he was 10-12 weeks old.

For DS#3, I'm keeping him out of most public places (even church) until he's 6wks old. I'm worried about colds, fevers, flus, etc....not really any diseases he can be vaccinated against, KWIM?

Yes, I'm going to take my 5 week old to a wedding that is upstate. I have already asked the bride (my cousin) if it was ok. If my dd is crying a lot we will leave early if we can't calm her.

Because my DD did NOT sleep most of the day.
In fact, she rarely slept.
A wedding at that age would have been a disaster- with her screaming and fussing and crying the whole time.
In fact, the supermarket or BRU was hard to do.
I will never forget one time my dad tried to take her for a walk in the snap n go...he ended up turning around and coming back after a few blocks because her screams were that bad....I heard them from down the block in fact...

I guess I just got VERY unlucky when it came to newborns!

Ditto for me!!

No. And it has nothing to do with germs. My DS was at a retirement party at 2 weeks old. I just don't think babies belong at wedding receptions. JMO. But if the bride to be is fine with it, why not?

Re: Would you take a 3 week old to a small wedding reception?

Yes. I traveled with my son when he was 3 weeks old and stayed in a hotel with him to visit his grandparents for the first time since my mother in law had surgery and couldn't come to visit. It was fine. He was fine. We already had him out to a restaurant at 2 weeks old, which would be equivalent to what you would be doing, since no one but us held and interacted with him. We are pretty laid back though.

Ironically, the only times my son ever got sick were when my husband was sick.

Eta we travelled to NJ as well.... Close to Philly!

My 1st DD was the SAME, so I feel your pain, sister!

I probably would go. I took both of my DDs to restaurants at 3 wks and #2 went to a communion party at that age as well. But I'm reckless like that...

NO WAY!
My ped told us that up until 6 weeks old, if they develop a fever its an automatic 2 night stay in the hospital to determine if they have specific viruses.

This! One of my closest friends is the head nurse at my pediatrician...but she begged me not to take DS out to stores/indoor parties/etc because of the risks associated with them catching any sort of a germ at that young of an age. She's super laid back with her own kids - so her insistence and conviction on this point made an impression on me.

Same here. I would be too scared. My brother got married when DS was 40 days old and I did not bring him to the wedding. I pumped in the bridal suite twice though bc I thought I was going to explode! At 3 weeks I could still barely walk! I couldn't imagine bringing a baby to a wedding.

No b/c I don't want 500 people breathing on them ! - Also, bringing a newborn baby anywhere means taking a considerable amount of attention away from the event - and I wouldn't do that to a bride, or whomever the event was for

I agree with all of this!

Is the baby here yet?

Honestly, 3weeks PP, I don't think "I" would have wanted to go to a wedding - you have no idea how you are going to feel.

Plus add in the germs, the possibility of a colicky newborn, and just the general issue of taking away attention from the bride and groom - no thanks!

True. I dont think I would have wanted to go to a wedding 3 weeks PP. Unless it was my sister, I'd probably not go. I was beyond exhausted and going to a wedding would have been the last thing on my mind.

Re: Would you take a 3 week old to a small wedding reception?

I just scanned the majority of responses- but I suppose I am in the minority. Not only did I take my one month old- to the day- born Dec 6, wedding was Jan 6-to a wedding. We took him to a wedding 1 hour north of Boston. That being said, it was a very close friend who I lived abroad with and I introduced her to her husband (set them up). Anyhow, it was FINE- everyone (friends, fam) made a HUGE deal that I was crazy to bring a baby to a Boston wedding. Well, it was just fine. He slept most of the time. Hubby had him in his car seat, keeping an eye on him while I had cocktails. Everyone oohed and ahhed over him. It was perfectly fine. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Everyone is so alarmist. Your baby is not going to catch on fire the second they enter public domain. We had a one month old at our wedding (they came down from Putnam Valley upstate since she was bf-ing). I agree that in GENERAL infants aren't ideal to be at weddings. As far as how YOU will feel.... all I can give is my own experience: I was 4 weeks PP- after a nightmare c-section and several surgeries and complications- and after a month of medical drama, it was NICE to get out and see friends! Good luck whatever you decide!

Re: Would you take a 3 week old to a small wedding reception?

We have an OOS family wedding to attend 1 month after my EDD. DS is the ring bearer. We will all be attending. I'm planning on EBFing so the baby will be with me the whole time. I know everyone flocks to babies, but I'm planning on keeping the baby as covered up as possible. I'm not thrilled about taking a newborn to a wedding for a variety of reasons, but I feel like I have to attend. Plus, with 2 kids, I'm sure I'll be out and about in public and potentially around a lot of people before then.
