Would you take DC's out of school for a week to go on vacation?
DD #1 is in Kindergarten and DD #2 is in Pre-K. I have no issues taking DD 2 out of school because she only goes 3 days and well, it's just pre-k.
DD #1 however was out of school for 8 days with pneumonia in Sept/Oct. Even though it's just Kindergarten, DH thinks she's already missed too many days and would rather her not miss any just for a vacation.
What are your thoughts??

I would not pull DS out of kindergarten. There are plenty of days off in a year.

It depends...wheres the vacation? Is it for something that cant be rebooked like for a wedding or something of that nature?

Re: Would you take DC's out of school for a week to go on vacation?
I have and did. I have done for both sons. I did feel more guilty this year because of course if was like the first full week back acfter hurricane sandy when I had my vacation booked so they missed a lot of school in a month (one is in 2nd grade and the other kindergarten). Then of course the kindergartener got sick 2 weeks later and missed another 4 days. It felt bad but my son is doing very well in school so he didn't miss much academically. I also made up all the work he missed.

DS is 4 years old but pre-K is the same as K here. He will be out for a week right after his spring break (bad planning on our part ). IMO it's fine, but I probably wouldn't do it for 1st grade or higher unless I didn't have a choice.
Good luck, I know it's not an easy decision

Would you take DC's out of school for a week to go on vacation?
I always thought taking your child out of school for vacation was extremely irresponsible. I thought it was TERRIBLE and there was no excuse for it. I grew up even going to school sick (no fever) so I did not approve.
Then, I went to Disney during one of their slowest weeks. . .and it was AMAZING. AND even during one of the slowest days of the year, it was STILL crowded (for me). So, I say screw that. . . in order to make those kind of memories with an older child. . .I would miss a week of school and hope for the best ( with a child who was not struggling of course).

Re: Would you take DC's out of school for a week to go on vacation?
Absolutely. Especially at that age. When they get into elementary school maybe 1st grade and on then no. Sometimes you can't help when vacations are. Going away during the school breaks are the most expensive. They will be in school pretty much the next 16 years or so. Make some memories now when they're young. We have a timeshare we go to every year and go right after spring break bc the prices get jacked up. DS is 3.5 and in preschool. Another couple of years we will still go till probably 1st grade. Lt the teacher know, ask for some work to go over and you can have DD do some work each night when you go to your hotel room. One week out of kindergarten will not effect them getting into a good college or not.

Would you take DC's out of school for a week to go on vacation?
I absolutely am taking AJ out of school for a week in November to take her to Disney World. Its kindergarten. Taking a week off won't do lasting harm. I have no concerns at all.
ETA: we always took a week off at school for vacations when I was younger. In middle school we drove from TX to SD to see Mt Rushmore as well as stop along the way to see Custer's last stand, and a few other historical stops. It was a blast. I STILL remember it. I don't remember a thing about the school year that is worth remembering in anyway. I had fantastic grades and went on to GT so I doubt that one week 'held' me back any.
We took weeks off to just reset with family. School is like work. Sometimes you need a mental health day. Generally I asked they didnt take me out until after attendance, as I had a perfect record. because that did me so much good these days!
I'm doing it now and I'll do it again. Now if she was strugging in school, no I wouldn't take her out. And for me the week off thing stopped when I got into competitive sports, U.I.L. (math and science) competitions, Choir, and other activities.

Yes. I refuse to travel during school vacations. Too crowded, not enjoyable, and too pricey.

It would be to go to Disney. Nothing that couldn't wait till school was out, but definitely cheaper to go when schools are in session.
DD is doing great in school. Her report card was excellent, no issues. If she was struggling at all I would never think to take her out.

Re: Would you take DC's out of school for a week to go on vacation?
my dad is a teacher and its been beat into my head that this is unforgiveable.
but I would totally do it with a kindergartener- just talk to the teacher and get the "work" that they'll miss.

Would you take DC's out of school for a week to go on vacation?
Most likely Yes. And I plan on speaking with teachers beforehand to get all work that will be missed and we will do it before we leave or even on vacation if were going to be gone for a week.
The only reason I could think of saying No is if one of my children is struggling and will fall behind and have trouble catching up if they miss a week.
its way too expensive and crowded to travel during school vacations!

Yes, at those ages I would!
I used to think I would do it at any age, but then my 1st grader was out sick for 3 days recently. Whoa, I could not believe how much missed classwork there was !!! Pages and pages of workbook material plus the homework. It made me reconsider my stance on pulling out of school for more than maybe 2 days.

Re: Would you take DC's out of school for a week to go on vacation?
I originally said never, but have since changed my mind. DD#1 is in Kindergarten and I think is the only one who hasn't gone on vacation during school. DD has been out sick but even her teacher said it has been like she was never out. I know many who pull for disney and cruises. They tell the school who say have a great time. Some teachers I have heard ask for a journal to read to the class. We are going in May. I plan on asking for DD's homework and maybe having her do a mini journal. From what the parents say up until 2nd grade it is okay but not after that.
I think you have to know your child and your district. I hear some are very strict. I wouldn't go if my child would have trouble catching up.

I agree.
We always missed school for vacation when we were kids.
I know things are different these days- but I'd still do it.
We always had to take school work with us to keep up.

Yep, I would take my kids on vacation without hesitation.........and I am a teacher!!!
In the grand scheme of their lengthy educational career a few days for vacation here and there are not going to make or break anything. I personally have no issues with it.

I absolutely would. They will have years and years of school, but they will have memories of a vacation to last a lifetime! I have total faith that the kids would catch up just fine.

I always said I would-now that he is in K-i woud not.
His teacher is dedicated, shows up daily to teach him-we can do the same. I feel for these teachers-I do expect a lot in return, I will respect her time and effort by sending him. but it is a different strokes thing-
