A few days maybe. A week? Absolutely not.

I always said I would-now that he is in K-i woud not.
His teacher is dedicated, shows up daily to teach him-we can do the same. I feel for these teachers-I do expect a lot in return, I will respect her time and effort by sending him. but it is a different strokes thing-
As a teacher, thank you so much for this. It is truly special to hear. I would not pull. There are plenty of other days in a year to go on vacation. If we are doing a 3 week math unit and a child is out for a week, it matters. My district is strict though and if you have an unexcused absence, we are not allowed to provide the work ahead of time for the parents to do with the child. So the children are behind when they come back. I think because of this, children are rarely out for vacation when it is not already a school vacation where I teach.

Ditto. A week is a long time to miss school, even in K.
Can you tack your plans onto a long weekend or something?

Would you take DC's out of school for a week to go on vacation?
I'm the daughter of 2 teachers & I would never. My husband, on the other hand would without hesitation. It's going to make for some lively debates in a few years!

I don't see a problem with missing school for a vacation.
The expenses for travelling during the school breaks are obsene and I refuse to pay them. DH works 2 jobs so I can SAH and misses lots of family time. If and when we have the chance to spend together, I don't missing a little school to enjoy some quality time together.

From a teacher's point of view - I would not take children out of school for a week.

Yes I have and we are. The price difference between school days and vacation days on flights is ridiculous. Getting all his work (DS is in Kindergarten) ahead of time.
Next year may be a different story.

Would you take DC's out of school for a week to go on vacation?
My parents did this with my brother and I almost every year when I was in elementary school so I grew up not thinking it was a big deal. IDK if my feelings will change once DCs are in school but for now, I am of the 'memories are priceless' mindset.

Yes...My parents did it with us. My mom always got our school work prior to going away. And we had to write about it or draw pictures (I was 4 one year we went to England)...
If they are doing good in school, I think it is ok. JMO

We took DS out of school last year for 5 days to go to a wedding in Disney (he was in kindergarten). I had no problem with it then but wouldn't do it now with him being in the 1st grade.

Re: Would you take DC's out of school for a week to go on vacation?
Thank you for all your opinions. I feel like if I did do it, this would be the last year. I don't think I would be comfortable doing it once she reaches first grade.
As of now, DH is NOT on board with taking her out for the week. Not because he doesn't think it's right, but because he feels like she's already missed too many days when she had pneumonia. We shall see!

Re: Would you take DC's out of school for a week to go on vacation?
My husbands vacation picks are done by seniority and school breaks and summer are always the first weeks to go. We won't have much choice in selecting vacation weeks and if I had to choose between my kids missing a week of school or no vacation at all vacation is going to win

This is true also. Dh has the least seniority even though he has been w company for 9 years!
It's such a huge price difference, I don't ever see us traveling on school breaks.

Would you take DC's out of school for a week to go on vacation?
No Way!
(Of course i graduated HS with perfect attendance since 4th grade!)
If i cant afford a vacation when school is out, then i will just pick a different vacation that is more affordable. You can spend good quality family time on vacation without travelling far or somewhere expensive.

Everything is inflated during school breaks. Whether it be near or far.

If I wasn't a teacher I absolutely would. Its so much to travel on non school holidays and if take work with you they really wont miss much in a week.

Re: Would you take DC's out of school for a week to go on vacation?
I have in the past and probably will in the near future. My DS doesn't get a full week off in February, just Monday and Tuesday. Now with this additional snow day, they've lost two days from March break. If we decide to go away that week, he will just miss.

No way! I could never do this. I take education very seriously. Also as another poster said its also about respect for the teacher.
So do people never take vacation days from work out of respect for their co-workers and bosses? One child out, or even two or three, isn't going to break down the class.

they have winter vacation, spring vacation and summer vacation. if you compare to work...you are saying someone with no vacation time left taking vacation.
our school will not give work out ahead of time.
