Re: Would you take DC's out of school for a week to go on vacation?
Without a doubt. Family time is just as important as school work and they can make up the work very easily in kindergarten.

Would you take DC's out of school for a week to go on vacation?
As a teacher this is my take
If your child is pre K to second grade and you are an active parent who will either bring homework on via action with you or work with your child upon their return to school 1 week will not harm them
If your child is 3rd grade to 5th grade .... Take them out September to Christmas or after May 1st .... From January to end of April is crunch time for the state tests .... Before and after they can catch up no problem
Anything 6th grade and older they can catch up themselves assuming they do not have learning needs which if they do support them
Family is the most important thing in this world .... Don't put off a vacation because it isn't the right time... When is the right time? .... You never know what tomorrow will bring

As of now, DH is NOT on board with taking her out for the week. Not because he doesn't think it's right, but because he feels like she's already missed too many days when she had pneumonia. We shall see!
Normally I have no issues with it. We are taking DS out of kindergarten for a week in April, but he has only missed one day so far this year.
If I were you I would wait until Sept or Oct, a friend took her kids out if 2nd and k in Sept and the teachers didn't even ask them to make up any work. Plus its quiet at Disney and value season so prices are good.

I would do it. I understand where your DH is coming from but it's almost like not taking her because of her illness is a punishment. Kids get sick and things happen. Now if you had already pulled her out for an 8 day vacay I would say no, but you didn't. Traveling when school is in session is expensive. Go make memories and enjoy the time. I would also say this no matter what grade they are in. You never know what tomorrow brings. You aren't saying vacations are more important imho. You are saying this family experience is important.

Exactly what I was trying to say but, worded better Most well rounded answer on this thread! Even better that it is coming from a teacher

I love this answer!
I was just talking to Johnnys kindergarten teacher..she had two kids out who were on vacation to disney this week...she said that she herself used to take her boys to disney and pull them out for a week while they were little (k-2nd grade).
I don't think it teaches that vacation is priority over school like another pp mentioned...I think that if its the only time during the year it happens, so what? If the child is doing ok and making up the work or doing homework/reading on vacation, then great. The memories of a family vacation are priceless. I was pulled out for a week when I was little (along with my siblings) because my parents couldn't afford to go at other prime times. We had a blast and didn't miss out on much at school. And it didn't teach me about making vacation a priority over school, I never viewed it that way at all.

This is silly at this point. Of course family is important..the most important thing we have. This is about going on vacation for a cheaper rate.
The OP'er said nothing about people who can only take vacation during school weeks due to time off. That is different IMO.

I see it the same - many people, myself included, cannot afford to take vacations during school breaks because of the huge difference in price. Who's to say the OP isn't in the same boat?
ETA: What I think is "silly" is people trying to make the OP feel bad for taking her kindergartener out of school for a family vacation.

Exactly. And, yhou know what, my mother was a teacher and during the time she wasn't working when we were little she had no problem taking us out of school once every few years for a vacation. And, despite this, my siblings and I all respected school and our teachers and all graduated top of our class and went on to get graduate and post graduate degrees. Despite making a vaca priority over school a few times So to the OP - ENJOY your vaca and don't sweat the small stuff

Re: Would you take DC's out of school for a week to go on vacation?
Thanks again for all the opinions. I can see both point of views.
However, as a family of 5, prices to go on vacation (esp. to Disney) during school breaks is significantly higher. I'm not talking $500 more, it's close to $2000 higher.
Of course I'm leaning towards pulling them out for the week, but DH has yet to agree.
