You really don't know how religious someone is. As for if it is disrespectful or not, well that all depends on the church. Church's are like politics some are ultra conservative some are very liberal. The church I grew up in (and loads of other family members have been married in) won't let you in with bare shoulders. Just chalk it up to different strokes for different folks. I am sure she is not trying to judge you, just venting and all wrapped up in her own wedding planning right now (as man brides are).
oh i completely chalk up to her wedding planning mania. i just cant take it anymore how her FH TELLS her what to do and she just does it. she originally wanted strapless, but now he said "no" she has to do what he wants. i dont like that. and i know for a fact he's not religious. he makes fun of ME for going to Church every Sunday and says "God never said you had to go to Church".
ooh I was way off base, sorry.

And furthermore...if he's telling her what dress to wear to get married...what else is he going to tell her to do. This is just the tip of the iceberg...
thats exactly what im worried about! i keep my mouth shut because i love SIL dearly...but her FH is total control freak!

I had a strapless dress and I didnt ask and didn't really care what the church thought. I PAYED them enough to get married there. It wasn't like I was wearing my bra and panties.

I heard it depends on the Priest and the Church!
I have also heard of priests taking out there hankercheifs and covering the bride.

SIL told me tonight that her FH wants her to wear a wedding dress with straps or sleeves to be "respectful" in Church. i was a little offended by this because my dress was strapless and obviously they know that.
For girls that had sleeves or straps on their wedding dresses, did you wear them to be respectful? Or did you just like the style?
Several churches/demoninations do have rules about sleeveless. I know several brides who wore a sleeveless dress but put on a matching bolero jacket or wrap at the church.
I wore strapless for my wedding but we got married at the hall.

Re: WR - do you think its "disrespectful" to wear a strapless wedding dress?
Not at all - I had a strapless dress and by no means did I think it was disrespectful - it wasn't a revealing dress by any means. I could see if it was a very low cut dress, very tight, or extremely low in the back.....but most dresses are not like that.

I exposed my shoulders in temple and it was awesome!! My grandma may have rolled over in her grave but...it's your day and if you are not getting married in a strict church/temple you can do whatever you want.

Re: WR - do you think its "disrespectful" to wear a strapless wedding dress?
The dress I fell in love with was strapless and my mother didn't like it. Then again, she just doesn't like strapless in general. So I had straps made for the gown.

Re: WR - do you think its "disrespectful" to wear a strapless wedding dress?
DH & I got married in a Catholic church & I still wore a strapless dress & so did my MOH. I know that depending on the church or how religious you are, some say, your shoulders should be covered hence, the bridesmaids should be have a wrap or something also. I guess I sinned then, none of our shoulders were covered

Re: WR - do you think its "disrespectful" to wear a strapless wedding dress?
I do know some churches do not allow strapless dresses.
Most girls just wear a shawl to cover up in church if that's the case.

Re: WR - do you think its "disrespectful" to wear a strapless wedding dress?
Some churches do not allow it. However, I think the issue here is your SIL's FH telling her what to wear. If the church is ok with it, then who is he to say the church is wrong? A friend of mine that got married a few years ago had a straplesss dress and her MIL told her she had to cover her shoulders, so she got a shawl...

Re: WR - do you think its "disrespectful" to wear a strapless wedding dress?
I had an orthodox jewish ceremony (was married by a Lubavitch Rabbi). My dress had halter straps and my BM's wore strapless. He had no problem with that as long as we wore wraps to cover our shoulders during the ceremony.

Re: WR - do you think its "disrespectful" to wear a strapless wedding dress?
I wore straps in church to be respectful. They just snapped in, so I took them off in the limo on the way to the reception, so I spent the reception and most of my pics were strapless

i think it depends on how religious you are and how strict the church is.
or, maybe i just looked like a whore-bride in my strapless gown. what can ya do? lol I must be the whore of Babylon then. For the record, my church requested I cover my shoulders to get married on the altar. They also wanted all my tattoos covered.
