WWYD - Car related
Any opinions would be appreciated - here's the scoop. We have 2 OLD cars (which is fine, they run & I commute to NYC everyday so I have only needed something on the weekends).
I have a 97 Maxima with 140K and DH a 98 Jeep (which he got last year and loves b/c he totes a lot of crap around in it).
Anyway, I'm due next month so we planned on getting me something new by the end of the month (probably Honda CRV or Accord - something along those lines). We really don't have extra $$ for my new car but we can make it work (either buy or lease, we hadn't decided until we see deals).
So, unfortunately, DH got to an accident with his car last weekend. He spent $3500 on this Jeep last year and now there is $2K worth of body damage (and he didn't have collision on it).
So, we essentially need to figure what makes more sense 1) get rid of both cars and lease 2 affordable (but new and reliable) cars 2) just stick to the plan, get one new car and put the $2K into the Jeep 3) get DH another used, but newer car
WWYD? I'm so frustrated b/c it's the worst time for this - but we have to make some decisions soon. DH thinks we should just repair his car. I'm concerned that there's no guarantee something wont' go 6 months down the line and we'll end up with one expense after the next.
Thoughts/opinions? THANK YOU!

I would probably get rid of the jeep, give DH my car and lease something for me. Hold on to your car for as long as you can to save some $$.

this is exactly what i would do. as long as it's running there is no need to replace it. as much as i want a new car my 98 honda with 152K miles on it still runs really well and is safe, so until it died, i'm keeping it to save $$.
good luck buying a new car(s)!!

This is an option too (although we were hoping to use my car as a trade-in, not that we'll get much). Another thing is that, he claims, in order to make the Maxima last longer, it needs suspension (whatever it is) and it'll cost $1500 to bring it up to par.
I def. want at least one new car by the end of the month since I'm already 34wks.

I don't know how much your DH would be using the car. But I would probably still do it this way. IF you can swing 2 payments a month, why not hold onto the older car and put the 1 payment into a savings. That way once the Maxima dies, you will have a decent down payment for a new one. Just a thought. Good Luck...I know situations like this can be so stressful.

I would keep one of the two cars and get a new car that would be your "family" car.

Thank you! I appreciate your ideas. I guess I just feel bad that it seems to make most sense for DH to keep my crappy car since that was originally his car from college that I took for weekend rides. He really enjoys his Jeep and needs it for a lot of home improvements so it's one of the few things he actually has. If wish I could just go out and pick him up a new one - a gal can dream

Not to throw another option at you. I know you were considering trading in your car, BUT do you think you can get $2K for it. If you can, sell it to fix the jeep. That way he still has his car, you can still put 1 payment away a month and you can a new car. EVERYONE is happy

That's an idea too! I think the Kelly Blue Book value is probably around $2K. I guess in the long run I don't think fixing the Jeep makes sense, but I do want him to have his car so I'll crack (and never let him hear the end of it if we have another issue this year ) Thank you!

Re: WWYD - Car related
I say fix the Jeep. Sell your car for some cash- you aren't going to get anything for trading it in. Don't forget the added expense of insurance for cars with loans. It's probably way more cost feasable to keep the jeep, with minimal insurance, even if it needs breaks in 6 months.

That was my DH's argument too but he just called the insurance agent for a quote. He pays about $375 for a 6-month period for basic coverage (no collision) on the Jeep. it would be an additional $150 over that period for the collision - so $525. The quote he got for FULL coverage on a Honda CRV in 6-months is only $511. So, it's actually more affordable for the same coverage and not much more if we decided to forego the collision on the Jeep again.

Re: WWYD - Car related
Tough situation and I'm sorry to hear about your husband's accident - I hope he's ok.
I personally wouldn't put the money into fixing cars that are more than a few years old.
I come from a leasing family, so we've always leased our cars and I think if you do your research, you can get a good car for a good lease. And from personal experience, you cannot go wrong with a Honda!
I would either lease 2 new cars or lease one and buy a used (newer) car for DH.
Good luck to you!

Whatever is the cheapest alternative would be my route. I'm also not a fan of leasing so I proly wouldn't do that.

Re: WWYD - Car related
I'd fix the Jeep - He uses it for lugging stuff around etc - and he can't do that in an old maxima - the Jeep is safer as well -
Besides, the Jeep has a much better resale value than the Maxima regadless of age - My DH literally coasted his 8 year old Wrangler into the dealership w/ 105k miles and a transimssion issue - they still gave him $3500 for it -
Fix the jeep, buy your new 'family' car for now, and when its' a bit easier for you financially, trade in the Jeep for a new car - Good Luck !!
