Common its a fun thing to share some winning. Toss some donuts your co-workers way!!!!! A couple of bucks to show a nice gesture.

if it were a bigger sum I would suggest helping people pay off their mortages.

Seriously???
I won $300 and actually am splitting it with a friend since we bought the box together, so my winnings total $150.

There are 175 people in my office..so you're suggesting i should just suck it up and get donuts for 175 people because i happen to work with them and happened to be 'lucky' and win some cash in the pool?

I'm sorry, but i don't find it 'fun' to be forced to share MY winnings with someone else because they lost. Life isn't like that..
Don't get me wrong.. if i was in a bar and happened to win a pool like this, i'd buy all my friends a round of drinks that were there. But i'm not doing it for a bunch of random people in my office.

Charity is one thing, and something people chose to do in their own way. Suggesting paying off people's mortgages is a bit delusional. this is an office super bowl pool.. not the lottery.
and even if it was a large sum of money, why should i be expected to give it away?

i agree with you 100%!!! you shouldnt be pressured or told to give away your winnings!! Chat Icon

I'm pretty sure this above poster was joking and not serious at all. Chat Icon

Chat Icon yes, thank you, im aware. my post was in response to the original poster. i agree with her. i do not think anyone is seriously suggesting that she pay someones mortgage.

In the past regardless of how much I won I always gave the organizer 10% tip. It's an unwritten rule that most people know before participating. But as for chipping in for pizza ect. Is that on top of tipping? If so I would tell him to take the pizza $ out of his tip. If you didn't tip him I would definetly chip in for pizza.

Actually, no, its not an unwritten rule. I and most people i've spoken to have never heard of tipping the person who runs an office pool. I've run these pools myself for several years and have never been offered a tip, and wouldn't accept it if i was.

I can't believe some of the stuff i'm hearing - tipping is just so out of control that people think its commonplace to tip a guy who drew a few boxes and gathered money in an envelope? Should we start tipping the people at work who organize a baby shower? they're doing the same thing, right?

SO true!! So I guess if and when I win the Lotto- I should go back and tip the guy at 7-11 who sold me the quick pick right?? Chat Icon

I always thought it was common practice to "tip" the organizer of the pool if you win. That's just the way i've always done it and seen it done.

If I were in your situation, i'd probably chip in the $20 with everyone else for pizza.

I'd chip in.

I feel like if I was at a bar and won, I'd buy a round on me. The way I look at it is - "Hey! I won SOMETHING!" And walking around with $275 instead of $300 is still better than nothing.

That's just me.

Re: WWYD - winnings from super bowl pool

I ran a football pool in my gagrage for YEARS and NEVER got a tip! I wouldn't take it offered, I ran it for the fun of it! And the winner every week, or at the end of the season never brought bagels, pizza, munchkins, ever. It's his money.

And I ask this, what of the person who didn't gamble, do you not offer them pizza? I wouldn't appreciate someone else spending my money. Unless, it was something the winners did every year and it was understood.

Yes it is an unwritten rule and just because you don't like it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I think you should ask some more people outside of your office or maybe do a poll to see what a common practice it is. Out of 4 pools I knew of this year everyone tipped regardless of how much they won.

What about contributions to their 401ks?

In all seriousness you made your decision that's fine.

I would still bring in donuts because I love love love to see some of my coworkers walk around with powdered sugar on their faces or clothes. It makes my day even more special.

Enjoy your $$$$$$$$$$$$$

Ok, obviously there is a difference of opinion amongst most posters on here as to if its an unwritten rule or not. By your same logic.. just because you think its commonplace, doesn't mean its right! I did take a poll amongst many people i know, and most if not all of them think its ridiculous to even consider tipping a person who runs an office pool. This is not a person's job as it might be for a casino dealer, this is a task someone chooses to take on for the fun of it. If you want to tip them, then by all means do. I don't. And isn't it silly to assume that everyone knows about it if its 'unwritten'? What about the people who don't usually participate in these pools and don't know they're 'supposed' to fork over money to someone if noone tells them? .. its just ridiculous.

And as i've stated before, i've run these pools many times myself and never once have i been offered a tip, by the hundreds of people who partook in them... so, i don't think its as common as everyone seems to think.

lets just leave it at a difference of opinion.

I do see what you are saying... if you were unaware. But if you were told about it and still choose not to tip that's another story. I know of one example when someone didn't tip (and knew about it) the next year they were not asked to participate in the pool. So I guess you can take your chances with the person who runs it.

WHy would you tip the guy running it??

I would not mind chipping in for pizza or bagels but maybe the person running it should say something before people buy their boxes that way they know that this is expected.

but the person running the pool has the same chances to buy a box and potentially win as does anyone so expecting 10% is a lot of nerve IMO. my pool was $10 a box, so if he took 10% he'd be making $100 off of it.. for doing very little work.
I'd tend to think he was running it just to scam money out of people. (which i know he wasn't)

Honestly, if i found out beforehand that i was expected to tip the guy running the pool - i wouldn't enter. I'd start my own pool.

And next year, i might just do that.

well usually the standard for that is.. the person running it does not participate in the boxes.. and thats why the 10% is usually given to that person!

but like i said in other replies... in more serious super bowl pools.. this is the usual.. for fun its usually not the case..

I would bring in something with my winnings (bagels, donuts or something) but at my own will.
I understand why you would be annoyed, I don't think the person running the pool had any business to send an email suggesting what you should do with your money. I'd get offended that anyone would just assume I wouldn't do something.

I agree. You shouldn't have been told to do it, but I would and I have used office pool winnings to bring in bagels or donuts to share with my co-workers. I just think it's nice to share your good fortune with others. Not neccessary, but nice.

I think its more about what is norm in your office. In my office, if you get promoted, you bring in bagels. So...that's what I did.

If year after year, this is what happens after the game then yes, I would do it. If this was out of the blue, I'd either decline or say that I would bring in something later in the week -- make brownies or something cheaper if I didn't want to contribute.
