Me too.. umm sorry- you didn't take anyone's money- and that was rude of the person to suggest that. They all decided to GAMBLE...when you gamble you have to expect to lose. When I go to the casino and drop $100 on the black jack table do I expect the guy sitting next to me who just won $500 to fund my dinner that night? That is utter BS!

Re: WWYD - winnings from super bowl pool
I would bring in something with my winnings (bagels, donuts or something) but at my own will. I understand why you would be annoyed, I don't think the person running the pool had any business to send an email suggesting what you should do with your money. I'd get offended that anyone would just assume I wouldn't do something.

I really wouldn't think anything of it. I think what the guy was suggesting is a nice gesture.
I'm sure everyone who participated in the pool fully understood that if they lost that was it but it's still a nice thing to do.
I would equate it someone getting a hole in one in golf. That person buys everyone in the club a drink.
I don't think I would be bothered by what this guy said in the least bit... I'm not trying to be mean here, but I really think you're reading a little too much into it.
It sounds to me like he was just trying to do something nice, that's all.
ITA!
I see like that there wouldn't be any money for anyone to win if those people didn't put anything in. So, in order to keep the spirit of it going, you do something nice.
And yeah, you should probably give the guy running it 10% too.

I always chip in when I have won a pool or I have tipped the person who ran the pool some money. I think it is the right thing to do!
But why is that 'right' ?? thats really what I don't get and i'm trying to understand..
It's a nice thing to do because you would not have won the money if someone didn't organize the pool.
ETA: It's not always fun running these things. It is a PITA to collect money from everyone.

I always tip the person running the pool... I thought that was "pool etiquette" but I don't bring in breakfast or lunch for the people who lost.

Re: WWYD - winnings from super bowl pool
Funny, the same thing has come up at our office. Started with the weekly pool. The bookie mentioned that the winner never "tipped" them. Let me state for the record that I am not a stranger to gambling and I have never heard of tipping the bookie. But then I didnt give it much though until last night when I won $200 in the super bowl pool. I am being told that the "typical amount" is 10%. I honestly am a little resentful

Re: WWYD - winnings from super bowl pool
After thinking about this some more and seeing everyone's responses, here's my take on it.
You have people like me - I spend $10 and buy one box - just to participate for fun. I am too frugal to spend a lot on stuff like this, I am just not a gambler. Then you have people like one of my co-workers, who drops $80 on 8 boxes. This guy is annoyed that he lost, but looks forward to the pizza the winner(s) is going to buy for lunch, or the bagels for breakfast or whatever.
If I win, am I obligated to buy food? No, but if it werent' for the guy who dropped $80 and the guy who dropped $50, etc. there would be no pool. So, in the end, I am OK with chipping in for the pizza or whatever.

Re: WWYD - winnings from super bowl pool
After reading all the responses, i believe my initial thoughts still stand..
1. when i do a super bowl pool, i do it for fun and the 'chance' i might win something. I usually put in $20 or $40 depending on how much the boxes are. It gives me a reason to care about the score when watching the game. If i win, great. if i don't, oh well.
2. I have run these pools in the past myself, and NEVER had anyone tip me. Frankly if someone did, i'd be embarrassed and not take the money. If its that much of a PITA to organize the pool, then don't do it.
3. I still stand by my thoughts that its gambling.. you win some, you lose some. You don't expect to share in someone elses winnings.
4. The idea that there would be no money if other people didn't contribute, and thats justification for buying people bagels or pizza or whatever as a thanks is just silly IMO. Think about if you applied that thinking to the lottery... would you expect the mega millions winner to give everyone who bought a ticket some cash?
I enjoy reading the responses though.. definitely gives insight into the different ideas people have about what is right/expected in these situations!

Re: WWYD - winnings from super bowl pool
I would be irritated that I was put on the spot regarding treating everyone in the office. I've never heard of that in a superbowl pool. We have a pool at my job, and I guarantee that none of winners will be showing up with bagels or donuts tomorrow. I think the same way as you do, Rachel...it's just like playing the slots or the lotto. No one expects to get anything if you lose.
That said, once I was put on the spot, I would probably suck it up and chip in, just b/c I wouldn't want to deal with the reaction to saying "no". I'm a wuss.

Re: WWYD - winnings from super bowl pool
It's unnecessary- but it would be a nice gesture.
If everyone else agrees, I would just do it.
We won the pool at DH's second job- and had to give the guy that ran the pool 10% back...which I think is ridiculous!!
I told DH he should do it next year, this way we're guaranteed at least a few hundred.

Common its a fun thing to share some winning. Toss some donuts your co-workers way!!!!! A couple of bucks to show a nice gesture.
if it were a bigger sum I would suggest helping people pay off their mortages.

In the past regardless of how much I won I always gave the organizer 10% tip. It's an unwritten rule that most people know before participating. But as for chipping in for pizza ect. Is that on top of tipping? If so I would tell him to take the pizza $ out of his tip. If you didn't tip him I would definetly chip in for pizza.

Seriously??? I won $300 and actually am splitting it with a friend since we bought the box together, so my winnings total $150.
There are 175 people in my office..so you're suggesting i should just suck it up and get donuts for 175 people because i happen to work with them and happened to be 'lucky' and win some cash in the pool?
I'm sorry, but i don't find it 'fun' to be forced to share MY winnings with someone else because they lost. Life isn't like that.. Don't get me wrong.. if i was in a bar and happened to win a pool like this, i'd buy all my friends a round of drinks that were there. But i'm not doing it for a bunch of random people in my office.
Charity is one thing, and something people chose to do in their own way. Suggesting paying off people's mortgages is a bit delusional. this is an office super bowl pool.. not the lottery. and even if it was a large sum of money, why should i be expected to give it away?

Actually, no, its not an unwritten rule. I and most people i've spoken to have never heard of tipping the person who runs an office pool. I've run these pools myself for several years and have never been offered a tip, and wouldn't accept it if i was.
I can't believe some of the stuff i'm hearing - tipping is just so out of control that people think its commonplace to tip a guy who drew a few boxes and gathered money in an envelope? Should we start tipping the people at work who organize a baby shower? they're doing the same thing, right?
