She is extremely reliable and i trust her 1000 percent. My concern is the social aspect. I have no hesistation with trusting her or her reliability. Im also in the mind set that she can always be put back in daycare if it doesnt work put with my MIL

Then I say go for it! Sounds like it will help financially and create a special bond for them.

I think all that "socialized"' stuff is crap. My kids were never in a daycare setting and are the friendliest, most outgoing kids around. I don't know where they got it from honestly!
I think their personality is their personality. Even if it made a slight difference, getting into a better district for their schooling is a much much larger benefit in the long run.

Re: WWYD

I'd do it to save the $$$ and it sounds like your MIL is great so you don't even have that stress of dealing with someone who's not reliable or is going to fight you on things. My mom watches my kids while they're too young for preschool so we can save that money that we'd otherwise have to use for daycare. She's tough to deal with but I just try to slap a smile on my face and say thank you because she's saving us so much $$$... especially at 9 months old & the fact that she's still going once a week... sounds like an ideal situation to me.

Thanks everyone! Dh talked to daycare yesterday. Her teacher even told him we would be stupid to pass up the opportunity.

Just wanted to add, that i have a few friends who had parents or in laws say they want to watch their little ones full time. They start out excited about it, then it slowly take a toll on them. They are not as motivated to get them out of the house and keep them active. Or they have appts and things that come up and they cant watch them all day leaving you in a bind.

This. We had family watch my DS a portion of the week and daycare the rest and it ended up being a nightmare. Schedule changes, doing things that I was totally against and just it overall sucking after a while.

I would never have family watch my child on a regular basis again. Random babysitting fine.

I think you have to realize though, that this is the price you pay for free family childcare. Going into it you have to realize that you may have to shuffle some things around at the last minute--but typically the money savings outweighs a few inconveniences!

If you like the daycare and trust them and are not having issues (getting sick too much, etc), I would not cut that out. Maybe half and half but no way would i let a family member watch my child that much for a list of reasons.

If she is doing good in daycare I would'nt mess with that even to save 1K a month. I am also not a big fan of using either Grandparents as "daycare" bc even in the best of parental relationships I feel like your wants and needs may not always be respected. I am a huge fan of daycare for endless reasons as long as it is a safe and loving environment.

Completely agree with this

Re: WWYD

I'd have your MIL watch her. The time she spends with a grandparent can't be duplicated. And either your MIL can have DD in social activities, or you can increase her time in daycare or preschool as she gets older. If your MIL is willing, I'd take her out of daycare altogether and save the money for things like mommy & me (or grandma & me) classes instead.

I would definitely take MIL up on her offer. If she is active like my mom, she will take her to mommy and me, playgrounds, etc. I do not feel that any of my boys' social skills have been stunted from being at home with Grandma. When my oldest turned 2, I put him in a 2 hour program a couple of days a week to socialize him more.

Yes. There have definitely been annoying incidents where I have had to scramble for day care and then there are the times they go on vacation but I am saving a boatload of money, my kids are in a loving environment with people who care about them just as much as I do and everyone is entitled to a vacation. I make it work. I will say I have never had a situation where anyone did something I didn't like and continued to do it after I said something...other than my mother letting DS drink her iced coffee. "Its decaf now. Dont' worry." Chat Icon He's going to be 41" for the rest of his life.

I would try it for a few months and see how it goes! 1k is a nice amount to save, plus one on one time is amazing. Plenty of time for school , daycare or whatever. I was home w my kids until nursery / pre-k. Daycare is for people who need full time child care. You have MIL Chat Icon we have a baby boy older than yours with a nanny, doing great with one on one

I'm clearly in the minority but I would continue to send her to daycare. I am a fan of set routines (especially for a baby/toddler) and feel that daycare facilities do this much better than family members. If my mom or MIL were watching DD (2), I'm pretty confident she wouldn't be on a set nap schedule, that she she'd still be drinking out of bottles, and living with her pacifier in her mouth. She's got them both wrapped around her finger and would run a muck, having them at her beck and call. Daycare was crucial to helping me with the transitions to sippy cups, getting rid of the pacifier, going from an AM and PM nap to one mid-day nap, etc. Sure, they can take her to a free library class here and there but I don't think a 45 minute class is equivalent to what goes on in a daycare facility that follows an educational curriculum. If your child is thriving in the environment she is currently in, I wouldn't disrupt it.

Totally get what you are saying, but don't you think a baby is better off on his/her own schedule, not the daycares schedule? Should they be expected to fall into the schedule of a daycare if they don't need to? It's the one thing that made me get a nanny. I felt like I wanted baby to do what he wanted when he wanted to, if that makes sense. And to save 1k a month, that's a lot of moola

Agree. Better off spending the money to buy in a different district

Let your mother in law watch the baby!
When the baby is sick you can't bring them to daycare and have to scramble to find someone to watch her or take the day off from work. With your mother in law you won't have to do that. To me that peace of mind on top of saving $1,000 a month is a no brainer.
