Re: wwyd apt. situation
If it were me, I'd take the bigger apartment and just deal with the carpet issue. If you are planning to stay in the apartment awhile, then I think you will be glad to have the extra bedroom as your daughter gets older.
To me, the carpet problem has easier solutions than sacrificing on space and staying in an apartment you are outgrowing. With the carpet, you could always put down new area rugs over the carpeting so there is new carpet for your daughter, or if she has a particular play area, get one of those play mats (they have those large ones with interlocking foam/rubber tiles). Also, as your daughter gets older, she will spend less time on the floor (is the walking yet?). But with the area rugs or play mats, even though she'll still sit on the floor to play, she won't be directly on the carpet.
It sounds like your management company isn't going to budge, and if they have a waiting list for 2 bedrooms, they probably know they can easily rent it to someone else if you don't want it. Unless you know that other 2 bedrooms have hardwood floors and they become available often, I would take the apartment! But only you know what you can live with and what you can't...
Sorry you are stressed! Hang in there.

Re: wwyd apt. situation
Can you replace the carpet yourselves? I know it is an added expense but at least u can control the type..color etc.. it may be worth it for the extra space.. good luck

can you rent a steam cleaner if it can't be replaced and just do a good cleaning on it?

You could always put a rug on top of the carpet.
