I would tell your dad what happened and see what he says. Maybe he'll tell you to just forget about it, or maybe not. At least you'll have a clear conscience.

You could offer up some of the money and see what he says. Or just tell him you still plan on selling DH's car, and will use this money toward the purchase of new car, and ask if he's ok with that.

My father would never take the money, but he might appreciate being asked. And then tell me to bug off!


Hey, it's not like he gifted you the car and you turned around and sold it within a month and pocketed the cash. This happened in my family. And the party that did the "gifting" could have really used the money themselves.

My personal situation may be different than yours. If it were me, I would give dad all of the money.

The money is yours.

Given the updated info, I would offer all of the money if it were my mom, or grandfather. Knowing them they would refuse and I would insist on them taking half. But thats just me. It is your money and your decision what to do with it, and don't feel guilty if you decide to keep it.

My first reaction is that it is your money.

When I read the second part that your Dad gave you the car I would say offer him the money. For me, I would offer and I know my Dad would not take it. But I would feel better offering, if that makes sense.
