WWYD? Car purchasing question

So I am going to post this giving no reference to which optinion I have. I want to show the results to DH and show him that I did not influence you guys to side with me. Here is the situation...

We have a 2008 Chevy Equinox which we use to travel a lot so it has 70,000 miles on it. We have decided that we are getting rid of it in a few months to get a larger SUV since we need the space. We also bought the vehicle new and with the depreciation and the miles, we decided to trade it in now since it will be another year or two b4 we would actually make a profit on the vehicle. We recently started having some problems with it which could cost a few hundred dollars to fix or it could cost not much at all, not sure yet. If you were planning on trading in a vehicle in 3 months would you stick with the plan and fix it to keep it for a few more months to pay more on the loan or trade it in now so that you dont spend $ on a car you are not keeping.

Re: WWYD? Car purchasing question

I think it depends on how much the repairs would affect the trade in value. If the repairs would increase the value of the trade in considerably more than what the repairs cost, only then I would do it. If it washed even, I wouldn't bother and would trade in now

For me it would depend on what was actually wrong with the vehicle, but more than likely, I would just trade it in now. In the 3 months the car will just have more miles and more depreciation on it. Unless it was just 100 or 200 bucks that you were gonna spend on repairs, most likely you'll never get that money back on the trade-in.

Re: WWYD? Car purchasing question

If you're thinking of trading it in, you should get a value estimate now. My SIL traded in a minivan that needed a new transmission and they gave her a really high value. You just never know.
