Honestly with gas prices the way they are - I would try and figure out which is better with gas mileage.
I have an SUV and I would never switch from it - but it does kill me to put that much money of gas in the car

Re: wwyd...car related?
If money is tight, I'd with a smaller SUV. There are some on the market right now that do better with or just the same on gas as some sedans do.
All my trucks are gas guzzlers, so I can't recommend one.
Good luck!

Re: wwyd...car related?
I have an SUV - gas prices dont really bother me because I dont drive that much. I love having an SUV with lots of space and love the fact I dont have to fold up my stroller to put it in How about a Hybrid or a smaller SUV?

I also have a gas guzzler and honestly I was thinking about trading it in but since we are financing it and if we have a thrid (if I can convience DH ) then I would need something big again so I decided to keep it. I don't drive alot anyway and the furtest I go is 7 miles one way when it local. It does kill me when we go to new york though.

Re: wwyd...car related?
I have a jetta and we want to upgrade to an SUV but with gas prices and the anticipation of them going even higher I am just going to stick with my little car. DS and I are fine in it and it doesnt break the back.
I think if you are leasing I would do a small SUV but if you plan to buy I think you might be disappointed when you have another child as the car might not be big enough.

Re: wwyd...car related?
For us, we have an SUV already and I could never go smaller.... I think you can get decent gas mileage in a smaller SUV or crossover. One car that comes to mind with excellent gas mileage that is a little bigger than a car but not an SUV is a Pontiac Vibe (same as Toyota Matrix). I had one for 3 years and I loved it, miss it at times!!

What about a hybrid SUV?
I have friends that just got the Saturn Vue Hybrid and they love it.

Re: wwyd...car related?
honestly....I always thought you needed an SUV in the family, until recently....
We have a cherokee and just got a new car for my DH, VW Passat. My DH loves it and I was so SURPRISED with the amount of room still in the trunk with our stroller. More than the Cherokee has with the stroller in it. The only con to the passat is the infant car seat is more snug, so you have to reach over between the front seats to release it, not a big deal, but the only thing I see as difference.
We don't get much snow (more ice) down in NC so we don't need an SUV, but it's nice to have for when we need it, driving to NY, and it is bigger inside.
I am not sure if it helps. But it's our recent experience.
ETA: our next SUV, when my lease is up will probably be a smaller one, like a murano or a hybrid one.

Re: wwyd...car related?
We are also in this dilemma. We have small cars and mine is being upgraded soon. We've seen looking into smaller SUVs, like the Tuscon and are now contemplating crossovers. Such a tough decision.
One major thing to think about is when you plan on having another kid. If it's soon, then I'd look into the bigger SUVs.
