WWYD re: Consulting Opportunity?

My boss approached me today and asked if I wanted to do some consulting work on the side with her (she has a side business). She said it would be a rather large time commitment with hours after work, on weekends and during lunchtime at work for the next 3 months. I wouldn't be reimbursed until the END of the 3 months, and pay would be contingent on the job I do / how much I work.

Here is the thing: I already have one Chat Icon and am 8 weeks pregnant with #2. I am already strapped for energy when I am home, and I miss my little man like crazy (i.e. I am not thrilled with the idea of working weekends and losing the little time we do have together). My boss does not know I am pregnant. I told DH about this "opportunity" and he does not think I should do it.

I told my boss I would do "whatever she needed me to do", because at the time, I felt like if I said "no" that there might be negative repercussions...

The more I think about it, the more I don't want to do it. The pay would be a little less than a month's salary... I just wish I knew exactly how much work would be involved, KWIM?

What would you do, if you were in my position? Thanks in advance. Chat Icon

I would tell her no. You dont want to stress yourself out. She cant hold it against you at your current job if this is some side work.

I would just say no, you can't swing that with your family...

Also, I'd be concerned that she wants you working for her side business at your current office (during lunch, etc.). I don't like the idea of using your company's resources for her other company (UNLESS, of course, your boss owns both companies).

Re: WWYD re: Consulting Opportunity?

I would tell her that you reconsidered and the timing is just not right for you. Do you know someone else you could recommend to her?

I agree. I'd say no. You need to be healthy and rested for your pregnancy and for any changes you need to adjust to when your DC arrives. It would be worse later if you can't keep up with your consulting demands on top of work demands on top of family demands, not to mention when will you have R&R time for yourself and DH? Just my opinion. I've never been great at balancing work-life so maybe I'm biased in my opinion? Good luck with your decision! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I agree. I've also taken on side gigs for extra $$$ before and it ended up being more aggravation and overall TIME $UCK then it was worth.

Re: WWYD re: Consulting Opportunity?

I would say no. I said no when pregnant with Chat Icon was first born to a promotion, just more responsibilty than I wanted and the raise wasn't worth time away and the stress. I took a promotion a year + later, better timing for me which lets me perform better on the job.
