WWYD re listing with family?
My DH's father recently got his RE license and is working for a realty in a town nowhere near us. He hasn't had a listing yet. My DH wants to let him sell our home b/c he helped renovate the whole thing (well, more then help - he did slave day and night for months at a time redoing the kitchen and baths). So, clearly we want to return the favor, BUT I have reservations a) we live in a desireable pocket and I'd like to have a realtor who knows it well - the other realtors we spoke to before we considered DH's dad live here and know the area like the back of their hands
b) would like someone with experience
c) his dad travels and I want someone who is going to be here to show my house and do open houses
Right now we're in the position where we plan to just list for a few months and see what happens. If we don't like the offers we're getting, or there are none, then we're pulling it off the market and would be perfectly content staying here for now.
I usually don't like to mix family & business, but I obviously didn't mind when his dad was here doing a lot of upgrades to our house - so that's not really fair to say.
WWYD?

I wouldn't do it. Mixing business with family is never a good idea. Besides, if he did end up selling your house, then he will make money off of you, which is weird too.

we didn't have to choose btwn family and a stranger...but this is the reason that we picked our REA over others we liked.
Some REA came in to give us comps and gave it of our zipcode...some houses didn't compare to our neighborhood. Our REA is active in our community, knows many of our neighbors and is constantly doing open houses for us. Remember - they are bringing buyers in to look as well - so they can get double commission - it's extra incentive to sell your house.
It will be easier to not use FIL if he didn't offer...just hire someone and say you didn't think about it. If he has said something, I think it's reasonable to say that you don't want the deal to go bad and strain any relations...would you be making a profit? you could offer a percentage of that profit for the work he has helped you with.

I wouldn't mix family and business. If you have a good relationship with your FIL I would want it to stay that way. You don't want to have any hard feelings about anything. You are better off with someone with experience and someone that knows the area very well. GL with your decision.

Re: WWYD re listing with family?
I was an agent up till a year ago- and while yes, someone who specializes in the area might be good- if you fil works for a big name company (Prudential, Century 21, etc) than its fine to go with him, agents of the local office will show it as will all those other agents.
good luck & if you have questions feel free to fm

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't your mom trying to sell your house before or was that someone else?
Sorry if I confused you with someone else.

Re: WWYD re listing with family?
I would let your FIL list it, if you had other people come in you should have a good idea of the listing price thats reasonable. I am assuming the house will be on MLS so realtors from your area will be showing your house

Re: WWYD re listing with family?
Wow, I guess I'm the minority, but I would absolutely give the listing to your FIL. I'm just looking at it like...what if you were just starting out...wouldn't you want your family to help jump start your career? I would feel bad going with someone else when he is in the field. He would probably also go above and beyond for you too! GL

Re: WWYD re listing with family?
So, I spoke to my DH again and he is really pushing giving the listing to his father. The problem is, we're not working with a lot of time - I'm PG with #2 and I don't want to sit on this much longer. I have no issues with my FIL - he's a great guy and he's done A LOT for us. I'd love to return the favor, but I feel it's too much of a risk for us at this point in our lives. We have a few months to sell and move, otherwise we have to stay put until comes.

Re: WWYD re listing with family?
I would list it with the most qualified agent available. This is no joke, a beginner would not be selling my house at all no matter who it was.
Also, I would not mix family and business. It WILL bite you in the butt. There will be some issue down the road that would make things uncomfortable. I can almost guarantee it.
Why do that to family? You will be doing him no favors if you give the listing to him and it goes no where and you are angry about it. If it doesn't go right, can you fire him?
Family and money do not mix.
