x-post: When can you turn carseat around to face forward?
Is it one or two years old in addition to the weight requirement? DH wants to do it (DS is 15 months), but I thought I remember one of the nurses at his pediatrician saying the recommended age is now 2??
I posted this on parenting, but for some reason I usually do not get many replies on that board, so I thought maybe someone on here who is pg with #2 or more might know!

from what ive heard the law says 1 year but they now recommend up to 2 years....but also pay close attention to what your car seat manufacture says because its more unsafe to keep a child rear facing if the child is over the height/weight limit for rear facing in that seat

I believe someone posted that as of November 09, the new rule will be to rear face until 2 years of age. But of course, your child has to still meet the height and weight requirements of your carseat.

Thank you - DS is above average with height, so that might be a reason to turn it around.

that is correct... the ruling is still 1 year/20lbs... they say to keep them rear facing until 2, but only if they are within the weight requirements for it to be rear facing... ds is 13 months and in the 125% for height...we switching him at 11 1/2 months because honesty he was sitting indian style...

DS is about 90% for height...I think soon it will be too tight to be rear-facing.

Re: x-post: When can you turn carseat around to face forward?
By law I believe it is a 1 year AND 20 lb rule however my first DS was a BIG kid and could not stand to be backwards since his poor little legs were crushed into his chest so although he was not 1 but over 20lbs I asked my Ped who said he thought it was a crazy rule and if I was to get pulled over no one would think twice about him being 1 and to turn it around. It really should be a case by case thing-I mean how would you like to ride around with your knees in your chest if you were too tall-LOL!

Yeah, you have to weigh out the benefits of keeping him rear. As others have said, it could be worse to keep him rear-facing if his body is hitting the back seat. Thanks!

Re: x-post: When can you turn carseat around to face forward?
The reason for the age requirements is that their bodies, and necks especially, aren't strong enough to handle a collision. If DC is turned around too soon, and there is an accident, they will be most likely very seriously hurt, even if the accident isn't that severe. It's mainly the neck issue, so I'm always surprised when they focus on DC's overall weight so much. A thin 15mo has a much stronger neck than a heavy 11mo, even if they are the exact same weight.
IMHO, I'd rather have DC uncomfortable but safer. Years before the new 2 year recommendations, we kept DC rear-facing until about 18-19 months.
The 2 year thing is not a law, just a recommendation. Many car seats are not designed for being rear-facing that long. It's definitely more important to stay within the limits of the seat you have. If it only supports 30 lbs rear-facing, and DC is 14 months and 35 lbs, absolutely don't keep them rear-facing.
