yellow squash??? (mom's who make your own food please help!!!!)
I am finally attempting to make DS's baby food today. I had picked up a yellow squash and was wondering if this is ok. I know the jar food has orange sqash for the stage 1 foods. Any help or knowledge would be greatly appreciated. I don't know why I am so paranoid about doing this myself. I am so scared I won't steam right or long enough. Why is this so nerve wracking?
Also, DH only picked up two trays, not knowing how many I would need, is there another way to store the food in the freezer? Or how long will it last in the fridge? Sorry for all the questions?

Yellow squash is fine. Steam it so it is really soft. I always froze the purees in the cube trays and then popped them out of there and stored in freezer ziploc bags that were labeled. Then things were easy to find. I stored for a few months in the freezer. I usually just took our for that day and put in the fridge. Have fun!

Just keep an eye on the water level. Honestly, I got the beaba and it was sooo easy to do.
But, you don't need it. I will warn you.. Liam refused to eat yellow squash. He hated it. It is kind of hard flavor. I had more luck with pumpkin or adding some cinnamon to it. I actually was able to mix it with food that he already like and it was better.
Also, I did squash in the oven, it's supposed to retain more nutrients that way. I halved it and put in a baking tray with water in the bottom and then tented it in foil and cooked it. Then the skin just peeled off and I pureed it.

How long did you have it in the oven?

Emmy loves squash from Gerber, but refused acorn. I would do a butternut. I cut mine in half, drizzled some EVOO on it and roasted at 425 for 1hr. Then scooped it out and used the food proc. Frozen in ice cube trays and then popped out and placed in baggies like pp said. Good luck....it's fun and easy once you do a few..........I will say that Emmy has refused to eat my homemade things now and will only eat jars. It's sad, but she has to eat

Only the best of us burn pots while steaming! Welcome to the club! It won't be the last time!
Nolan's second veggie (after sweet potato) was zuccini. He loved it and still does. If you haven't done a second batch of the yellow yet, you really do not have to over steam the yellow squash or zuccini. They have lots of water in them and get soft quicker than the ones like acorn or butternut that cut more like a potato consitency. And you may not really have to add much water if any to thin it when you puree.
When I see jarred foods and how watery they are... I never had Nolan's food that liquified and he was fine. I found it easier to make them a little thicker and freeze them, that way 1. it was taking up less space in the freezer and 2. I could thin it to his liking at the time of feeding. Plus you can thin with warm or hot water to help cut the chill of the fridge!
Good luck and check out that post that was bumped! Feel free to bring it up at the Arboretum and I'll give you any advice you need!

Thanks everyone!!! I need to keep this up! I just did a new batch of sweet potatoes and carrots. I didn't have anymore squash, but oh well. It came out great and is in the freezer now. I guess I will make fruit tomorrow, I was hoping to get it all done today. Off to a BBQ in a little. Thanks for bumping the thread too!
