You know what really gets me angry

It's been two years since the Hurricane of the South hit and the place still looks like 2005.

1,600 people died. How is this okay? I refuse to believe if this happened in Brooklyn or Hoboken or Rockville Centre these places would still be in ruins.

I mean look at the pictures if you have a second. It really is devasting. What a way for our government to blatently show that they could give a sh!t

New Orleans Bad News

- Much still looks like a wasteland, with businesses shuttered and houses abandoned

- Basic services (schools, libraries, public transportation, childcare) at half original levels

- Only two-thirds of the region's licensed hospitals are open

- Rental properties in severely short supply, driving rents way up

- Crime rampant

- Police operate out of trailers

I agree its a shame but so many people just left the area....never to return again. They arent going back to rebuilt their houses or businesses so things will just stay in shambles. Im sure that those that left their houses, didnt get anything from the insurance companies and now the banks own the houses and they arent going to do squat about it......

Not trying to make a joke out of it, but much of NOLA looked like that even BEFORE the hurricane hit...and that's probably why the gov't is not so quick to step up. It's not like it was SoCal or somewhere up here in the Northeast where there's big populations and lots of $$.

They said on Good Morning America that the population is up to 98% of what it was pre-hurricane.

Re: You know what really gets me angry

To play devil's advocate here -
Like someone else posted, a lot of the area looked liked that before Katrina.
Also, the fact remains that New Orleans is BELOW sea level. If another hurricane were to hit, the same thing would happen. I am not saying that they area should not be helped, but there there may be no way to make it hurricane proof, or even hurricane resistant. By living there, one is taking a chance for devestation by tropical storms and water. Should the government really be pouring money into a place like that? It has nothing to do with the demographic of the area, rather the geographical location of it. Do you want your taxes to go up to fix a place that might have to be fixed time and time again?

ITA. I was in NO in march the year of Katrina. I was dirty, grimy and run down for the most part. and it drizzled one day - there was PUDDLES for days. the city is below sea level and NOTHING drains. there is a large, steep stairs to walk up if you want to see the riverside. its litterally a soup bowl.

I honestly dont beleive what they say. There are many areas of NO that people are still not allowed to go into....so the houses and businesses in that area are not being looked into.

If I lived in that area, went through what people went through, and had a chance to go somewhere else and start over...I wouldnt even look back.

I could be wrong, but maybe building a city below sea level on the Gulf of Mexico wasn't such a good idea. this could and probably will happen again.

and I agree with the person who said that NOLA wasn't exactly in perfect shape before Chat Icon

I am NOT saying that the situation is ok, just giving my opinion.

That wasn't NO, that was the lower counties of Mississippi that were hit hard. They tend to focus on that area since that's where Robin Roberts is from (Pass Christian)

What bothered me is that I recently saw a report (forget what channel) about the new superdome they build in New Orleans after Katrina.

FEMA gave 150 million to rebuild the superdome. Yes, 150 million dollars. While how many people still don't have housing? Doesn't FEMA have higher priorities than a football stadium?

I'm all for sports and recreation, but that it just wrong in my opinion. Especially considering the second part of the report was how the team's contract was up in a couple of years and the owner would most likely move them out of New Orleans.

I remember after it happened - hearing about the logistics of it all and thinking is it worth it to rebuild? Storms keep getting worse, it won't take much for this to happen again. Chat Icon

The storm was a category 3, which has happend 40 times in NO and nothing has happened. It was the levees that broke that brought on the catastrophe.

I think it stinks to say 'look how they lived before'

So they should live now in worse conditions??????Chat Icon Chat Icon

the storm surge is what was the main problem - you are right, it was a category 3 when it hit, but since the storm was so large and powerful right before it hit landfall, it made the storm surge worse than a normal cat 3.

and they knew of the levee problems before the storm - why did that moronic mayor do anything about them before this?

In all fairness (even though we know FEMA totally phucked up two years ago) this is off of FEMA's website they have "obligated more than $1.2 billion in Public Assistance funding for the state of Louisiana".

But hey, numbers do lie sometimes and we know that the gov't isn't always exact with it's $$ figures.

I guess the proof is in the NOLA quagmire....

good point. $150 million is a drop in the bucket compared to $1.2 billion. and they need to have a shelter for the next storm, which will happen.

eta: and what about the insurance companies who denied funding? and then made millions!

Re: You know what really gets me angry

My sister gripes about this all the time, she lived in NO at that time, but she evacuated and as someone said, when she left she never looked back.

THe levees were a huge problem here, they need to be fixed and improved somewhat. And it wasn't just the mayor's fault. Also not all parts of NO flooded, where my sister lived did not flood. But regardless of whether people move back or not how can they just leave all those broken down houses and filth all over.
Its sad that we are more concerned with helping other countries and with helping our own.

Hmm, well let's see...according to the National Priorities Project (a 501(c)(3) research organization) since the invasion of Iraq in 2003, the war has cost the USA well over $400 Billion. So if you take $400 Billion and throw it towards a war, that leaves $400 Billion less to be spent at home. Now I don't know what the entire federal budget looks like, but I'm betting that $400 Billion is a nice bit. Compare that to the meager $1.2 Billion....

Oh and let's not forget that a good deal of that $400 Billion is going to companies like Halliburton (Bush & Cheney's pals).
