the 2008 Federal budget is $2.9 trillion.

Ok, so then the money being promised to Louisiana is less than 1/4 of 1% of the 2008 budget and the war gets about 3.5% of the budget.

The fact of the matter is that Bush considers the war an investment in our future and the future of Democracy. An investment in NOLA will return pennies compared to the returns from the oil-rich Gulf. So as any good investor knows, you don't put your money where you're not getting anything back. It's not about "priorities"

how is giving the gulf region $1.2 Billion dollars cutting corners Chat Icon

(i dont agree with the war either, but i dont see the correlation).

Hmm, well let's see...according to the National Priorities Project (a 501(c)(3) research organization) since the invasion of Iraq in 2003, the war has cost the USA well over $400 Billion. So if you take $400 Billion and throw it towards a war, that leaves $400 Billion less to be spent at home. Now I don't know what the entire federal budget looks like, but I'm betting that $400 Billion is a nice bit. Compare that to the meager $1.2 Billion....

Oh and let's not forget that a good deal of that $400 Billion is going to companies like Halliburton (Bush & Cheney's pals).

Thank you! You said it better than I ever could!!!

What bothered me is that I recently saw a report (forget what channel) about the new superdome they build in New Orleans after Katrina.

FEMA gave 150 million to rebuild the superdome. Yes, 150 million dollars. While how many people still don't have housing? Doesn't FEMA have higher priorities than a football stadium?

I'm all for sports and recreation, but that it just wrong in my opinion. Especially considering the second part of the report was how the team's contract was up in a couple of years and the owner would most likely move them out of New Orleans.

ITA!

It's like *** are our priorities man?

It looks superficial and frivilous on the surface, but the SuperDome generates income for the city and state - They are going to put the money into rebuilding their tourism and whatever else can generate income and jobs before rebuilding someone's 2 bedroom house -

I dont think the Superdome is generating that much income for the city and the state now - enough to make all of those millions of dollars worthwhile. I doubt that many conventions and events are renting out the superdome considering the area in general! People put conventions where there is a nightlife, and a nice area to stay in. That's not New Orleans right now....

It's a big circle. People won't want to come to use the superdome for their convention because the area around it is ravaged.... They won't update the area around it because the superdome isn't adding revenue...

Sounds like a big CF to me...

For the people who don't think NO is worth rebuilding because it is a hurricane prone area, couldn't we say the same for Florida and other southern states? Chat Icon

Nearly every area is vulnerable to some kind of weather related catastrophe- earthquakes, tornadoes.

The parts of New Orleans that were most affected were below sea level. That is what caused the horrendous flooding. Also because of where it is on the Gulf makes it more vulnerable.

I get what you're saying, but I feel like it isn't a fair argument.

The whole eastern shore is potentially at risk for major hurricane damage, and would probably be rebuilt if necessary. Why shouldn't NO also be rebuilt?

This is my point EXACTLY

ETA:
California gets hit with forest fires and tornados. Florida gets demolished at least once a year with a storm. We help them, we fix the problems there.

no one says, we shouldn't help California because it will probably disappear in 100 years.

Well I didn't say I don't think its worth rebuilding, what I said is that I don't think its worth pouring money into trying to fix a problem that might not be able to be fixed (the levees, etc.).

The east coast is vulnerable to hurricanes, but not like the below sea level parts of NO.

Also to make my argument more fair - the gazillion dollar houses on LI's south shore - I don't think those should be there. If they get wrecked by erosion, storm, what have you, I don't think the goverment should give any money to them. If you want to build on land that is super vulnerable to mother nature, then you are taking your chances.

Florida does not get demolished at least once a year. And why would CA be gone in 100 years? It is moving northward and will eventually end up by Alaska, but certainly not within the next 100 years.

I think Nancy was referring to the yearly damage done by hurricanes. While not on the level of Katrina, it still very expensive, especially when it happens yearly, without fail.

Scientists have been predicting a huge, devestating earthquake for CA, for a really long time. Seems to be a matter of when, and not if.

But what do we do about it? Restrict people from living there? I don't think that is a realistic expectation.

If you count all the areas that are especially vulnerable to natural disasters, (CA, FL, LA, GA, NC, SC, etc) there wouldn't be a whole lot of room left for us to go.

I agree...the whole situation is still so out of control! It really shows how public service really isn't that at all!

no, you can't restrict anyone from living anywhere - people should know they are taking their chances if they live in these areas. I know that by living on LI my house could be potentially damaged by a hurricane. If I lived in CA I would know that an earthquake could happen at any time. I would take my chances if I wanted to live in these places. (well, actually I do!)
I am just not sure it is the government's responsibility to give an infinite amount of money for disaster relief. They have given and are giving a lot of money to the areas devestated by Katrina. I think that the initial reaction was appalling, but now the government is responding appropriately. I think that it incorrect to say they are not doing anything because New Orleans is poor and inhabited mostly by minorities.

Edited for horrible typing!!

I don't know about anyone else, but if no insurance provider was willing to insure my home b/c it was under sea level and near the ocean in a prime hurricane zone, I might think twice about living there.

I am not going to rely on the Gov't to take care of my house and everything in it if it gets destroyed.
