Re: Young Mother Sacrifices Herself for her Unborn Child
I don't think anyone really has the right to judge this mother.
She wasn't sitting there saying "wow i can't wait to sacrifice myself for my unborn child and leave the toddler motherless..".
She was obviously VERY pro-life. Pro-lifers believe that a human life is sacred and would never end that life inentionally. No matter what the case.
I consider myself to be pro-life but honestly i don't know what choice i would make. It would be SO SO difficult for me to ever have an abortion, but i would be so upset knowing i was leaving my other child motherless.
HOWEVER....if she were to have had an abortion she would have lived with knowing in HER mind that she did that to her unborn child. For some, the decision may not have affected them as severely. But for someone extremely pro-life, it goes against what they believe...i guess she thought that the child deserved a chance at life just as much as any other baby.
I'm not saying anyone elses choice would be right or wrong. HOWEVER none of us can begin to understand this womans convictions and the agony she prob. went through.
The only part i truly don't understand was refusing treatment in the 3rd trimester. But again, we aren't her...

Re: Young Mother Sacrifices Herself for her Unborn Child
hmmm... DH's cousin was diagnosed with cancer when she was 10 wks preg. She had treatments throughout the entire pregnancy. Her daughter was born at 38 weeks and is completely healthy almost 2 yrs later. Were they prolife or anti-medical care? Abortion wasn't the only option here for everyone's survival. This couple sounds like they were surrounded by poor Drs from the start....

Re: Young Mother Sacrifices Herself for her Unborn Child
Well, I know someone who was in the exact same shoes as this woman.
She had a daughter, was pregnant again, and felt so sick in the early stages of the pregnancy. She thought it weasn't normal to be that sick, got checked out... The baby was "viable" when she discovered she had cancer.
She was given the very same options, and chose to terminate the pregnancy and went through intense chemo. Lost all her hair, everything.
When I spoke to her after terminating the pregnancy, I told her how sorry I was. She took it in stride, and said everything is meant to be, and could never leave her daughter. She wanted to fight the cancer for the sake of her family.
It was all so very sad - but she fought the cancer, and won!
And then, a year into her remission- she discovered she was pregnant again! And this time she was able to give birth to a healthy baby boy!
So - if you believe in God and his plan in the universe - you can't help but think when God wants life to happen, he will make sure it happens regardless....

ITA! I could never answer this question unless, God forbid, it happened to me. But a lot would depend on what my prognosis was.

Re: Young Mother Sacrifices Herself for her Unborn Child
There is more to the story, medically, than was in the article. It sounds like the cancer had spread & was very agressive.
I'm glad the VERY premie baby is OK.
It's hard to know what you would do unless you were in a situation.

Re: Young Mother Sacrifices Herself for her Unborn Child
I know someone who was in this situation. She had two kids and was PG with her third when diagnosed. She also refused to have any treatment that would harm her baby. Baby was born very early and is now a healthy child. My friend began more aggressive treatment after the birth but passed away when the baby was seven months. She did not do this for religious reasons as far as I know and did not think twice about her decision. She left a husband and three children under five.

If she only made it 23.5 weeks after diagnosis, her cancer must have been in a very advanced stage. Treatment may not have extended her life at all at that point. IMO she did the right thing and I would have done the same.
I agree

I agree, the cancer must have been very advanced and her prognosis not good at all. I would have refused treatment as well.
