I wrote that I've seen those infomercials...and while its kinda cool to see a little baby/young toddler recognizing and "reading" words, its just not something for me. I feel kids are already so rushed these days....I don't see the point in a 1 year old needing to read certain words. And it's not really "reading". They are shown flashcards over and over with words and then pictures so they learn to recognize the words and say them...
To each their own...I don't think it would hurt a child, I mean any stimulation is good for them and if a baby truly loves the videos then thats ok. I just feel its more for the parents to say "oh my baby is reading!!" and I think "why is that such a concern at this age??". Just my opinion!!

Exactly how I feel. I hate to rush my child into anything she's not ready for. I wouldn't waste the money if I can do the same for her by reading to her.

I think it is good if you realize that all you are really doing is building their sight vocabulary; which IS important
of course they are not really reading; as they cannot remember every letter, sound and digraph; but it can't hurt

Re: Your Baby Can Read!
i though the informercial looked interesting too.. from the reviews i saw online it seems like it works better for a younger baby, and less for an older toddler

Re: Your Baby Can Read!
I think I'd rather focus on something like sign language. In addition to giving toddlers another way to understand the world, it gives them a way to express themselves. I am sure you can do both sign language and a reading program but we already throw so much at young kids these days. I think I have to take a closer look at some of these reading programs but this is my initial thought. Also, I am not sure if the one from the infomercials is the exact one I would pick.

ITA! i don't think it's rushing your child to read as long as it's fun for both of you. it's just another way of teaching your child different things.
i would buy it if it wasn't so

Re: Your Baby Can Read!
With these kinds of programs, the "words" are really just "pictures" to DC. I don't think that DD can "read" just because when I show her a picture of an elephant, she says "elephant". It's picture recognition.
As long as it's an enjoyable time for both parents and DC, I don't see the harm, but just keep in mind that they aren't really reading.
I wonder if it would actually slow them down from truly reading when they are in school. If they spent years learning words as pictures, how easy is it to switch over to recognizing words as combinations of individual letters? I have no studies to cite, just something I thought of just now.....

Do you think is good for their talking skills then. I see how it can make a baby read, but maybe it can help with talking. Thanks!
