Similar to the real estate concept of the "Worst house in the best neighborhood" idea...

When I got married many moons ago our site wasn't top notch but we splurged on the DJ and it was totally worth it....almost 10 years ago and people still rave about what a great time they had.
IMO entertainment is more important than venue...whats a beautiful venue with bored people

Oh How I TRY to make people understand this! NO ONE is leaving your wedding talking about how amazing the centerpieces were (except my MIL) or how nicely the napkins were folded....they talk about how great of a time they had!!!!
Doesn't matter how nice the hall, the food, the service.....your reception room was built around a dancefloor for a reason.....

I think it depends on what you been by chintzing out on enterainment.
Strolling violins versus an orchestera? A 5 piece band versus a 10 piece? A dj versus a band? (Personally I prefer DJs as long as they don't turn it into a show).
What you think as chintzing out maybe their preference versus yours.

Re: Your getting married in one of the nicest places in the Tri-State area....
G, if you were to search my LIW posts re" dj's, you would see how SHELL SHOCKED I was at how much they cost.
I originally budgeted around $600....which I quickly had to readjust after doing some research.
it may not be that they are chintzing out b/c they don't have the cash, they may be someone like me, who had the cash, just not a clue
I also think the wedding industry on a whole is overpriced, so it pained me to spend every last dime.
I ended up paying around $1k and had the dj also emcee. it was against my dj co's wishes...but paying an extra $600 for some guy to announce us and then dinner (b/c I did NOT under ANY circumstance, want a "party starter" emcee) was completely insane to me.
it all worked out. I loved our dj. he played the music I wanted to hear (and NO line dances as requested )
ETA: I think food trumps everything at any party.

Re: Your getting married in one of the nicest places in the Tri-State area....
I always felt entertainment was more important than anything else. When you cook in mass quantities, food tends to be "eh" anyway. I have yet to be blown away by ANY wedding food and I've been to more weddings than I care to count. I would have been happy with a weenie roast in my mother's backyard, but I would have had the same band regardless and we used a disproportionate amount of our wedding budget on entertainment. My feeling is that if your entertainment sucks, your people wont dance and therefore wont be terribly happy thus making your pictures suck as well.

I think most wedding music -- band or DJ -- is pretty cheesy.
The best part is hanging out with friends and dancing and laughing -- which can just as easily happen by listening to good music pumping from a boombox. Who cares?

I agree with this.. but I'm not a food person to begin with. Bring on the liquor! Bring on the music!! and hopefully I'm not "that girl" on your wedding video

I do! And being that I also spent a disproportionate amount of money on my band, I would like to think they were anything but.......cheesy...... I guess you haven't experienced a GOOD wedding of late.

Although you probably take it that way, I really am NOT trying to be rude.
Having been a guest at over 30 weddings, I have seen every combination of thigs. Terrible food but great entertainment. HORRENDOUS band but great food Great entertainment in a beautiful hall with fantastic food.
And the place whose food sucked was a great time because the crowd was on the dancefloor the whole night, we didn't care that the food was terrible because we danced our butts off.
And the band that stunk up the joint? They singlehandedly RUINED that reception. THANKFULLY the food was good, but that's not what I remembered most.....I remember seeing that bride in tears because her dancefloor was EMPTY.
But hey! To each his own, it's just a shame that some people don't know how great it COULD have been....

I don't think its ALWAYS the DJ who can get people up there or not....sometimes its just the people, the combination of people, how drunk people are etc
but I always remember the food

Re: Your getting married in one of the nicest places in the Tri-State area....
I got married at Oheka and we paid an arm and a leg for a great Hank Lane Band (which was pretty good back when i got married not sure now) and added several add ons. That said, although EVERYONE always asks me what band I had when it is their time to get married and everyone after said that it was great etc. OHEKA is the one thing everyone still brings up over 5 years later - not the band. Soooooooooooooooo the place can matter sometimes more But, then again maybe if i had an AWFUL bad or DJ they wouldn't have even noticed oheka
