Re: Your getting married in one of the nicest places in the Tri-State area....
This is another one of those "different strokes..." arguements, IMO. If I knew someone with a sound system and I could have hooked up an Ipod with the music I wanted on it, I would have been happy with that.
Our DJ was great, but we paid a lot less than most people do (under $1,000). I also think the dance floor was active at our wedding because WE were dancing the whole time. I think the only time I sat down all night was part of the timethat dinner was served. As we were trying to make our way around to greet everyone, my DH kept getting dragged back out on to the dance floor.

IMHO, the amount of money you spend on a DJ in no way equates to their quality.
I think that can be said for a LOT of things in life.
It's always QUALITY versus QUANTITY. Just because someone spends 10x what someone else paid does NOT mean it's any better

i guess maybe you splurge in certain areas but try and save in others- just to stick to a budget
Honestly though, and this isn't just because I work for an ent. co......
Your entertinment is NOT the place to cheap out......what is a reception FOR then?

I guess that explains why he just called and booked my company versus the $600 guy...... It is impossible with many things in life to sustain quality cheaply.

Oh I know, I think it's ridiculous- people get married at Oheka and have a DJ... flame away, but I just don't see it.

I totally agree with this. IMHO, I dislike the lights, the emcee, the "entertainment" factor. We had a DJ and emcee at my wedding and people had a great time. We actually told the DJ company to do as little talking as possible! Our guests didn't need prodding to dance, they just needed to see us on the dance floor and a few drinks in them! To us, flowers and food was more important.

Re: Your getting married in one of the nicest places in the Tri-State area....
i don't think that it's necessarily how much you spend. I got a great quality DJ for $650 for my wedding (granted he knocked off like 200 bucks cause he was an ex cop and my DH is a cop but it's still under $1,000) I didn't want an emcee (i think they're corny and ruin the party) and i didn't want the blow up dolls He played exactly what we wanted plus he felt out the crowd and played other music. People were dancing but we got married at the Riviera and the bar is awesome and I married an irish man so most of the crowd was at the bar but they were dancing at the bar haha.
Personally, bands could be good, but they could also be terrible. they could have an off night. I'd rather hear the originals rather than someone impersonating it unless it's like an irish band or a mariachi band

No matter how much money I had, I'd choose a DJ over a band any day. No one sings the songs better than the original singers, and a lot of the music I like cannot be duplicated by a band. For that reason, I dislike bands.

Re: Your getting married in one of the nicest places in the Tri-State area....
I always remeber the food first, than the entertainment. I personally don't think that the entertainment makes the wedding but rather the guests.
I've been to weddings where no one sat in their seats because the crowd was a dancing crowd - yes the entertainment helped, but they were going to party regardless if the hosts spent $6000.00 or $600.00 on the entertainment.
I've also been to weddings where the band was great but the guests were not a lively crowd, so the dance floor remained empty throughout the night.
I don't think you need to spend big bucks to have good entertainment.
Personally, I prefer DJ's over bands...I prefer the original artist sing the song. I feel you also take the risk that the singers you saw when you booked are still available the night of the wedding.
This happened to friends of ours. They paid big bucks because they LOVED the way the lead singers voice sounded. Come the day of the wedding - he was no longer with the comapnay and someone not up to par as him was singing at their wedding.

this is just one of those areas where I don't agree with most people- I just like the atmosphere live entertainment creates. I think a lot of people don't see the value in live bands anymore, especially with so many second rate bands out there. There's a big difference between booking a wedding band with musicians that have a "real" job and hiring a band of musicians whose jobs are to be musicians only.

I think it depends on what you been by chintzing out on enterainment.
Strolling violins versus an orchestera? A 5 piece band versus a 10 piece? A dj versus a band? (Personally I prefer DJs as long as they don't turn it into a show).
What you think as chintzing out maybe their preference versus yours.
I totally agree with you, but when someone asks for the entertainment total to be....catch this....$600!!!!!!!! Any way you slice it....THAT'S Chintzing out....
DH & I DJ weddings as a side business and WE CHARGE 600.00 We know we're most probably worth WAY MORE but we figure, we don't do the fancy lights and plasmas TVS why not give some brides and grooms a break and not OVER CHARGE them... we do a very good job... So while you THINK someone might be *chintzing* out, MAYBE they know the DJ or something? A low price doesn't necessarily mean low quality... We take a lot of time preparing for each wedding, listening to what the B & G want etc etc.

I have been to a few awesome weddings where I know for a fact that the B&G paid less than $1k, some around the $600 range, and I didn't feel like they "chintzed out". You don't need bells and whistles to get everybody up on the floor, just good, fun music. JMO.

Re: Your getting married in one of the nicest places in the Tri-State area....
I don't remember what we paid for our DJ, but we were on a budget so we didn't go crazy. Our DJ was awesome, so I agree with the idea that spending $$ doesn't guarantee the best. In fact, I was going to splurge on photography, and saw a range from lower-end to high-end, and we actually weren't all that wowed by the most expensive and used the budget photog, and our pics are amazing.
But for $600, you could get a pretty awesome mime.

I totally agree! Bands make every song sound the same! To me thats boring - I'd much rather spend $ on the place/food/ drinks and be cheap by using a DJ.

We got married at Capitale and had LI Sound DJ play at the wedding. Neither of us like bands at weddings, so we didn't really feel like we were giving anything up.
