Schools can open
Surprised no one has posted already about it.
Just have to wait to see the individual schools plans but looking better for parents who want their kids back full time :)

I think it wasn't mentioned because each individual district has already been communicating their plans to the parents and it was expected their plans would be implemented once they got the official go ahead. Most districts only proposed one substantial plan. So the news conference didn't really change anything for our district.

The option is there though as he could have said no.

I honestly thought he was going to give another checklist of impossible things districts had to complete. I’m excited he gave the green light. Now let’s hope schools follow thru with their plans and they can stay open once opened!!

I was so pleasantly surprised to hear the King's ruling. I wonder if white smoke rose from the capital when he rendered his decision like when a new Pope is chosen.

I did not like his answers to the reporters. They did not clarify anything.
Why is the state providing absolutely no guidance on specific procedures for closure, testing and contact tracing in the event of a COVID-19 case in a school? They are leaving it all up to individual schools which is unacceptable. There needs to be specific guidelines. All districts I am involved with say contact tracing and school closures will be determined by the DOH. Is the school suppose to be doing all the leg work and not the DOH?!???! If anything his press conference had left me feeling less confident with schools Re-Opening.

Totally agree. I am a public high school school teacher in Nassau County and feel all Cuomo did was deflect the blame- whatever the outcome.

Is this part of the school districts plans already out?

The districts plan is to follow DOH guidance and that the DOH is in charge of contact tracing. Cuomo’s answers to reporters made it seem as though schools need to develop their own testing procedures as well as contact tracing and quarantining procedures. This is unacceptable. The state needs to provide specific metrics for this.

Not all plans got the green light. Over 150 schools haven’t even submitted plans and 50 schools submitted plans which have been deemed incomplete.

150+ is a big number! Wow! I’m surprised they didn’t adhere to the deadline.

Excellent! Our numbers are soooop low here compared to many of the other places where opening schools has been a huge problem. Our district has as much of a safe plan as they can offer. The numbers will never be zero and we can't sit home forever. Fortunately for those that aren't comfy in my district, they can school their kids at home.

I feel exactly the same way. I get if some don't feel comfortable but so many do and we should be allowed to go back.

I find the testing, isolating contact tracing the least clear bc all the school plans say is they'll do it in conjunction with the DOH. I'm glad he's asking schools to be more specific about it. I still think it needs to be coordinated with DOH but I think they need to have the procedures clarified on all ends before schools open and they're just scrambling to figure it out as they go.

I don't think this means they all open full time. It means they can open according to the plans they made that follow all the guidelines. For many that still means a hybrid of some sort.

Ours is return to school with social distancing regulations. We were asked today if we wanted remote learning and everyone I spoke to told them no, they want full time school for all grades.

This is correct. Whatever plans your district came up with, many of them hybrid, will still go forward...

Hoping ours is mostly in school and if they have to have some days at home for a bit we will have to deal with that. Very happy though with this decision as it sounds much better than a year like this past spring.

I believe you have older children. Most MS/HS plans have students in school 2-3 days a week. All MS/HS plans I have read so far are vague in terms of the workings of the actual school building. This lack of information is Very stressful and I do not feel like it will be as smooth as the younger grades.

Yes 1 older child and they have said maybe a few times a week. I want a week like the younger kids.

Re: Schools can open
our district submitted plans for all 3 - full time, hybrid and remote. Since he said they can open it seems ours is going to full open. I honestly think a hybrid start would be best to see how it goes. We'll see

Your district already got back to parents to let them know? We are wondering when we will hear as we all were asked to take a quick survey yesterday morning.

we were asked to take the survey by the 7th. I am sure that there are some that did not get back. But we got an email late yesterday that said "As stated in our Reopening Plan on Page 36, the intention is to open in person unless the metrics change, and the Governor directs us otherwise. " That sound to me like they plan on full open. I really think hybrid is better to start to see how it goes
